Does anyone know if you can get the hair braiding done on the boat? My DD (7) thinks this is cool. I know that it can be done at Castaway Cay - but why waste valuable beach time if not necessary? Any tips on hair braiding?

Howdy all...my first post here :Pinkbounc We went on our first
cruise in December of 2002 and there was a hair braiding "station" on board, however, we have two boys, so I didn't really pay attention to the price..sorry.
Hope it helps ya some.

Nina

Hair braiding on board in Jan was $1 a braid. They also did cornrows but I don't know how much that was. You can make an appointment and I suggest you do. We decided to have DD5 braided onboard because we didn't want to waste time on Castaway Cay where we originally planned to have it done. The other advanatge is that you can enjoy it longer during the cruise,

I have always wondered why people wait until their cruise to have the hair braided. Don't waste your valuable vacation time. There are many young teens that have expert braiding abilities in the high schools, intermediate schools, etc. If there are any black teenage girls in your area, ask them if they know anyone who braids. Better yet, if you see someone with a beautiful braid pattern, ask them who does their hair? Chances are, the teenagers will not charge the same price as cruise braiders, or island braiders, and you will get a better job. I always havemy hair done a day or 2 before the trip. Your hair can be washed with the braids, but it must be done carefully. But if you are uncomfortable with this idea, then never pay more than $1 per braid. Check your childrens' hair and make sure that the braider is making "straight, uniform" parts! There is nothing that ticks me off more than seeing someone who does not know the difference receive a poorly done braid pattern. Just because Caucasion hair has the more fine grade, does not mean it should be allowed to be sloppy. Make sure that the braider pins the hair up with clips that is not being braided each time she goes to a new row or braid. This will keep the hair from falling into the already parted area. Insist on a good job, because this is your money being spent!

Another option is to get it done at a braid shop before the trip.

As far as "straight uniform parts", that's not how most people are getting their braided now. The parts are curved. Like Sprewell and Alicia Keys.

My DD4 got hers done on the 1/25 Magic. She has 9 cornrows going from the front to the crown of her head with beads at the crown, and 4 "regular braids," two at each temple that are braided all the way down with beads at the end (so she wouldn't have to sleep on beads at the sides of her head.) It cost me about $22 plus tip if I remember correctly. The ladies who do it are very nice and will work with you to get what you want.

The cost of the braids varies by what style (regular braids, cornrows, etc.) and the length of hair. Very long hair costs more. My daughter has waist length hair and they told me $1.50 per regular braid. I think they had something about appointments in the navigator, or just stop by the braiding station on deck 9 and make one. They fill up fairly quickly. They are usually there most of the day on sea days and in the evenings on port days.

What I liked about having it done on the ship was that it was and is a great reminder of our trip. She still has them in a week and a half later and I expect them to last another 4-7 days before I have to take them out. She is so proud when people comment on her hair and she says "I got it done on my cruise!" We will definitely budget for this again next time we go.

PS: Make sure to apply sunscreen (spray on kind is easiest) to the parts so your DD's scalp doesn't get burned.

We just returned from the Wonder. Hair Braiding was right next to the Goofy pool, except for the one day it was a little chilly and they moved to the ESPN Zone locker room. It warmed up later on, but they did not return, they stayed in the locker room. I did not know you needed an appointment and I just went up the day we wanted to have it done. They then told me I needed an appointment and had the appointment book right there. They scheduled my two girls for later in the day. My dd9 complained it hurt and there were tears in her eyes. She had trouble sleeping that night, but by the next day she was fine and still has the braids now. My dd6 went next and she is a wimp. I was very afraid she would not make it through the braiding. Well, it did not hurt at all, in fact she fell asleep while the braiding was being done. Both girls cost me $50 with tip and it took about 1 hour.
The girls have had so much fun telling about their braids since we have been home and it is a wonderful reminder of our trip. I was wondering about tips while removing the cornrow braids?

The tip about sunscreen is a good one. Also, when I mentioned for the parts to be straight, I meant that whatever the pattern, whether curved, zig-zag, or straight, that they should be "uniform." I guess I should have worded it differently. I didn't mean it had to be in a straight pattern. People just need to make sure no one rips them off, that is what I meant. I was wondering how long it took to braid on the ship. So it is about 1 hour? That is not bad. Do they use more than one girl to do it? I know of places that use a woman on both sides of the head. When I take mind out, I have a very easy method because my hair is soft. What I do is buy a very cheap jar of cholesterol cream conditioner and a bottle of regular hair conditioner. I wet my hair in the tub until drenched. I then put globs of the conditioner in my hair. I plan to use the whole bottle. Starting at the bottom of the braid, never start from the scalp, I take a large tooth comb or brush and holding the hair at the roots so as not to pull, I work my way up the shaft of several braids at a time. they just fall out because the conditioner makes the hair extra silky, and it just slides open. Mind you, I usually have several hundred shoulder length braids, which are my hair, not extensions. It takes me about 1 hour for all of them. Then I wash my hair once they are all out.

My daughter had 5 or 6 braids put in, and she liked them and wore them for a long time after the cruise (2 or 3 weeks). We had a woman ask us about doing them in Nassau, but they wanted $2 and more per braid.

We only had her get 5 or 6 braids, so it wasn't that expensive, and she really enjoyed doing something different with her hair. I don't think I would have wanted her to spend $25or $30 or this, though...
