My 12 yr old had her hair braided in cornrows while on the Dream. We took them out tonight, and lots of hair came with them. Is this normal? Thankfully, we only let her do the front and not her entire head. Has anyone else experienced this?:scared1:

The same thing happened to my DD's hair when she had it braided years ago. I was told that some of it might be breakage because of the tight braids but a lot of it was just the normal hair loss. You probably don't notice how much hair you lose everyday but when it is bound up in a braid then it has no where to go.

Exactly this. You lose a significant amount of hair every day, and when its braided, it will fall out, but not fall off the head due to the braid holding it.

My daughter experienced this too and I told our hairdresser aka cousin and she said it was a combination of breakage and normal hair loss.

Definitely normal hair loss. I was reading about dreads once (don't ask) and it described how handfuls of hair fall out when people finally take them out. So no worries. :)

It has happen to our DD over the years too, but we could see no long term effect.

Normal hair loss, no worries. If it bothers you get a children's vitamin that has biotin in it. It will promote new hair growth. Now if you notice an entire section of hair came out, that's a different story. But in any event, if she doesn't have an iron deficiency it will grow back on its own.

This is my DD years ago. This was the one & only time she got braids ! We called her simba.:rotfl2: It took longer to take out the braids then put them in !

Both my DD's get their hair braided every time we cruise. They loose some hair, but not much. We would take them out while their hair was wet and use LOTS of conditioner. Made it much easier!:tink:

It happened to my DD when she had the front of her hair braided at CC. They really know how to braid the hair, but my hairdresser said the hair falls out from trauma and from taking them out. She suggested that if DD wants her hair done again that we not attempt to take them out ourselves, and to bring her in for that chore!

That's what we have always done also! The beads and rubber bands just slide right out.

My DD has her hair braided quite a bit. We are African-American and it is much easier to maintain her hair by keeping it braided. Usually we can keep her braids in for 3-4 weeks at a time. When I take her braids out she does have hair that falls out or hair breakage but it is from the new growth of the hair. This is the same breakage that would occur if I was to comb it everyday. There is no long term effects and her hair does grow with the braids in which can be seen once her hair is all combed out.

My daughter's hair came out in CLUMPS!!!!! :scared1: And, while it was being braided, this child who never cries was in TEARS because it hurt so bad. So, never again. EVER. :scared1:

Agree. I would not worry about her hair falling out, when you have had your hair braided for any period of time you are going to lose some as if you were combing it everyday.

I'm 10 and have been on 2 Disney Cruises and both times I got my hair in cornrows. The first time I had a lot of hair come out and break off but the second time, my mom carefully cut each rubber band so we didn't pull any hair out.

I have thin, straight hair and got braids in the Bahamas once years ago. There was significant breakage and damage to my hair (NOT normal hair loss). I would never do it again. I think this is for people with curly or thicker hair.

DD (8 yo) had her hair done on the Wonder in February. There were a few tears when they were doing it, but she was such a trooper.

She did have some breakage up front by her forehead from one of the braids. Probably 8-10 hairs that broke off, so she had this little tuff of hair that was sticking up for a bit. It was noticeable only since she doesn't have bangs, her hair is all one length and quite long (she has only had a hand full of haircuts her entire life).

We would do it again, she loved it and it was much easier than having mommy do something with all her hair every day.

No offense, but she is going to do nothing different then you are. I think she saw the opportunity for "$$cha-ching$$.

It is normal hair loss. Since the hair is braided for many days, the normal hair that we lose has nowhere to go and is bound into the braid. As soon as you loosen the braid, the hair that fell out during the week that you normally would not notice, is released.

I agree with Conrad. Braids are for people with thick full hair. If you have thin hair, no only is your scalp exposed to the sun that whole week, but the breakage is worse.
