Hair beads gunky- How to clean

Hi,
My daughter had her hair braided on the ship last week and there is a gunky film on them, proballay a mix of sunscreen and sand. Does anyone know how to clean them?

We had the same problem recently and unfortunately never came up with a great solution. If you read the link, it may eliminate about 40 options we tried!

By the way, did you use Waterbabies sunscreen? That's what we used and my DSIL said they always use Nuetrogena and have never had that problem. Just an FYI to file away for future reference!
