Is this true-if you have a waist of over 40 inches you can't go on Hagrid? Quite apart from the irony as Hagrid's waist is WAAAAY over 40 inches! that does seem quite restrictive (and yes as you've guessed I'm on the limit and after 10 days or so at WDW first will probably be over the limit!) All the footage we have seen on Youtube shows people clearly well over this limit in line.
And please no trolling, its a legitimate question

When this was first announced I remember someone bringing up the fact that technically this is written as a restriction for other rides as well (such as The Mummy) for example. I have well over a 40 inch waist and can ride The Mummy. I believe it serves as a warning to those who want to ride and covers their tracks if someone is unable to ride. While it's restrictive from what I heard it's not as restrictive as what they report. Also, depending on what vehicle you do, one could be more comfortable than the other (guests report the bike being more "roomier" than the side car). Guests will have to try the test vehicle seats.

I do not know where the source of the 40 is, other than I wonder if they're purposely going under just in case, or that is where they estimate the start is for the modified seating.

Thanks for that-I suppose there's always the chance that after 6 hrs in line my waist will have shrunk...:rotfl2:

I think it is a guide line. Those with under 40 in should be able to ride without a problem, those with 40 or greater may have a problem and should check out the test seats.

They can not give a yes or no to every body type so greater than 40 is a good starting point, If you have a 40 in waist, it is a good chance that you are a bigger sized person and may have a problem riding.

I'm 42" and I fit into both sides without any problems at all, FWIW. (Although I'm pretty tall)

It’s definitely a tighter fit than all the other rides. It’s also awkward when they pull you out and don’t tell you anything when checking fit. My wife and i easily fit but they didn’t explain what to do while checking fit. For the record I have approx. 48” check and 44” waist. I had no problem with either but like I said the side car is more snug than any other ride that I have ridden on at Disney or universal. The bike is marginally better.

I do not know where the source of the 40 is
It was a response from Universal Social Media Team in the comments section of their blog post about Hagrid ride. So not a rumor.

Question: "Any announcement yet about the sizing of the seats (or can we big folks ride)?"
Response: "...Guests whose waistlines are 40" (102cm) or greater may not be accommodated on the ride. A test seat is available in the front of the attraction entrance to assist."

It was me that originally posted that info on here as it came from a reliable source and it also says it on the app and board outside of the ride :rolleyes2 Same as it was also me that said it also says that about The Mummy, Gringotts, Forbidden Journey etc

Everybody’s body is different and I guess it depends on where you carry your weight so ymmv but that’s why it always best to try the test seat first.....

This is just like checking IDs for anyone that "looks under 35" to buy cigarettes.

They are simply encouraging as wide a window as possible of guests that check the test seats before getting into line. Theoretically, if anyone with a 40" or larger waist checked the test seat, nobody would be turned down at ride loading. Still could be a few exceptions, but far fewer variables like where weight is carried, height/weight ratio, etc. than what exists when you try to more accurately quantify where the exact limit is.

Interesting that the avg waist size for women is 38.5" and men 39" (medicalnewstoday.com) not sure how accurate, but if so it seems the ride isn't built to comfortably accommodate half of the population.

Average doesn't mean that 50% of the people are below and 50% of the people are above. You're thinking "median" which the stats don't note.

For a simple example, if I had 5 people with waist sizes of 38, 38, 38, 38, 48 then their average waist size is 40. But that means 80% of the people in that group are below 40".

Unfortunately I can't find any sites that give a median stat of the % of people who are above 40" waist size.

But as others have noted, the message about waist size for the ride is a generic one to get larger riders to ensure they try the test seat in front of the ride entrance to ensure if they can fit or not. Many rides at Universal have the same warning, and many have stated they have waists much larger than 40" but would still fit.

Ok I ride it last night. I’m a 40” waist. I cannot speak for the sidecar, which is clearly for smaller people. I did the bike and easily fit. I would guess 46-48” would be more like max than 40”.
Great ride, but I would advise just doing it and not trying to learn too much. Enjoy everyone.
