I'm just wondering if anyone else thinks Hagrid may be returning after all?

According to reports, before the movie was released, the actor playing Hagrid had decided not to re-sign for the third movie.

But at the end of the movie, they all gathered around Hagrid and told him it wouldn't be Hogwart's without him, then everyone gave him a standing ovation?

I sure don't remember that much attention to him at the end of the book when he returned, and neither do either of my parents, who just finished re-reading the book (it's been 2 years for me).

We're all wondering if, since Richard Harriss died, Hagrid decided to return after all or if maybe he'd decided to return before Harriss died, or if the standing ovation bit was a goodbye to the actor who played Hagrid?

Yes I did, but it's been 2 years since I read book 2. Are we just not remembering the return of Hagrid in the books?

I guess I wasn't clear -- the actor who plays Hagrid had said he wouldn't sign for the 3rd movie or beyond, meaning they'd have to find a new actor to play Hagrid. I'm wondering if that actor has decided to stay as Hagrid or if he's still leaving and they'll have a new Hagrid for the future movies.

Are you sure you weren't thinking about the late Richard Harris (Dumbledore)? Before his death, he was already pretty sure he wouldn't be doing the 3rd. They've already started preproduction work on "The Prisoner of Azkaban", and Robbie Coltrane is on the cast list.

I think it's just something that was scripted in the movie and nothing to do with real life negotiations.

I wonder if this article is what Rajah is talking about? It was several months old.

"Robbie Coltrane is playing Hagrid again in the second Harry Potter film, which is due to be released next year. He says he would have concerns about playing the role over and over again, for fear of getting typecast."

I hope he stays with the series. He's one of my favorite characters and I can't imagine anyone else playing the part.

Yes, MerryPoppins -- I think that in a more expanded article is what I'd heard. Only what I'd heard was that he had decided *not* to sign back up. This was several months ago, though, back when they weren't even quite done filming/editing I think.

If he's on the cast list for #3, that means he'll be back. Yay!! He makes an excellent Hagrid. :)

I don't know why he is so worried about being typecast. He really looks nothing like Hagrid. With all that hair you really only see his eyes and nose. :)

I also read that he was quitting his tv series. More worries about being typecast, according to that article. Sounds like a recurring thing with this actor.
