Boy I am feeling so bad~We had to put our dog to sleep today and I feel awful!! He was 17 years old and not well so it was the best thing for him but no matter how sick they are you can't help but feel bad. It is so "wierd" in this house without him. It was very tough to tell our 2 daughters. (10and 7) We waited till they got home from school and told them then. One cried and the other just didn't say anything and still hasn't, but that is just how she handles things. Later she'll talk when she is ready. Thanks for listening everyone.

My sympathies to you. I know how hard that is - we did it 11 months ago. It takes awhile but the pain will subside to a dull roar.

Losing a pet is never easy. They aren't just a pet, they're part of the family. I'm sure your daughters will bounce back from this. Actually, it's good to a certain extent for them to see and experience the whole "circle of life" thing in this manner - in other words, it's better that it's the dog and not a parent. I lost 2 pets growing up and took losing both very hard, but I am a stronger person today because of it.

My suggestion would be to grieve for an appropriate amount of time (one or two months) and then get another dog. That will really help their pain.

Hope all turns out well and you guys weather this storm without getting too wet. :D

So sorry. That is a good long life though, what kind of dog? It would be nice to get another dog eventually, your girls are still young enough they would grow up together. You can find lots of older dogs that need good homes on PetFinders.com, then you don't have to go through the whole puppy mess. Also almost all breeds have rescue organizations. We got ours at 11 mos. at the shelter, he is great. I hate to think of the day when he won't be here anymore. I think God should have given dogs a longer lifespan, I mean why do those giant turtles need to live for a 100 years??

{{{HUGS}}} Life will be rough the next few days.

Thanks guys for the hugs. My dog was a peek-a-poo and his name was Snuggles.

((HUGS)) It's so hard to do that. Just remember what a wonderful life Snuggles lived.

I'm so sorry. I know how hard it is to lose one of our fuzzy family members. *hugs* to you and your family.

It is so sad to lose a member of the family like that. Just know that Snuggles had a good life and was well loved. {{{{{hugs}}}}}

We had to do this three years ago with one of bearded collies. It was extremely difficult. My wife had seen this coming and we had a puppy already at the house that made it easier for the kids. This is extremely difficult thing to do.

Are you going to replace the dog? This was a great help for our kids but each person needs to do what is right for them.

I'm so sorry. That is such a tough thing to go through. But you are right, it is often for the best.

So sorry! :( That is such a difficult time. We had OLD animals too. Logically you can reason it out. But it still hurts so bad and you miss them so much.
When we moved to Omaha, all our animals were old. So over the years they were put down. :( Never got an easier.
I let my first two go too long and they suffered too much. I was determined not to do that to the others. Either way it was bad. :( I just had to do what was best for them out of love. Just like old people, they have good days and bad, and you keep hoping they will pull out.
It's a pain that gets better, but it s a slow process --even when you have extra ;) animals around.
Just like with a person, I try to remember the good times and know they had a good life. I still think about them and miss them. They were all good pets. But their quality of life was poor and not fair to them.
We have other pets. I don't look at them as replacements though. You can't really replace, you just enhance. ;)
When your pain eases a little, go to the shelter. getting another animal, esp from the shelter, makes you feel like you are doing for your old buddy.
After the last one -- I said NO MORE PETS! It's too painfuil. Well then you look into the face of a puppy and your heart melts all over again.

I am so so sorry to hear this :( {{hugs}} to you and your family.

Oh how sad:( I know how you are feeeling. You become so attached to your pets & they really do become one of the family & they have so much affection & bring so much joy.

I had to deal with the loss of my beloved pooch at 14. She & I grew up together & while I was at school, my Mum & brother took her to the vet & had her put down. I was not told until I came home from school & I ran to my room & cried & cried.

I feel so sorry for you & I hope your feeling of loss will change to that of joy in time. Joy of knowing your pooch & having had the love & good times you shared.;)

My sympathy to you and your family. I know how much it hurts. I had to do the same thing 4 weeks ago with my dog who was 15. She leaves behind my other 15 year old dog who is now heart broken and cries everyday when we are gone. I wasn't going to get another dog but he is so sad and we really love dogs that we are on the lookout for another shelter dog now.

So very sorry, Princess. :( They mean so much to us. {{Hugs}}

Just this side of heaven is a place
called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet
goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and
play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and
comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those
who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember
them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss
someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and
looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs
carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you
cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses
rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once
more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never
absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
