Hacker Ransom Disney Film

Thanx for making me aware of this story @k8Davies . So sad the world has come to this.

Can't WAIT to see my beloved Johnny/Capt. Jack in the theater!!!

Bob ain't gonna pay publicly, privately......

There is a reason theft is one of the oldest documented crimes. People have been stealing other peoples stuff since we had stuff worth stealing. As long as there is a market for stolen material, there will be those willing to steal. As consumers and citizens we should be aware and consciously object to these practices and not benefit from or view stolen material.

I know right lol :)

Also with big budget production with lots of action, I want to see it on the big screen to really feel immersed and you just can't get that watching it on your computer screen.

Although the irony of Pirates being subject to piracy :p

True that, @k8Davies . I never would have thought of that angle on my own, I'll admit, and may not have heard about the story at all. That's one of the things I always said I love about DISBoards - my fellow posters let me see things I may not have, and think about things differently (and usually much more substantially) than I would on my own!!!

Its amazing in this digital world how entire movies can be stolen from remote locations

As an aside to this discussion, quoted from the article:

"The sad fact is that it's easy money for them. People often choose to pay simply because they just want their data back, whether it's a blockbuster movie or those irreplaceable family photos."

I urge everyone to back up their digital photos and videos to more than one place. External drives, SD cards, thumb drives, physical album, whatever. If you think paying a ransom is bad, look at the prices on having a broken hard drive's data retrieved.

Thus far, studios aren't paying these ransom hackers because they figure the people who will rip a movie online for free aren't the same people who pay box office prices anyway. They're just getting the movie for free earlier than they would normally. Because by the time a movie gets to DVD/Blueray/Streaming, the cheapskates are all ripping it off of a torrent site anyway.
