I just saw an article that they are closing May 31! We get there the next day. So disappointed as our family tradition had been to always get a chocolate shake from there on our way back to our hotel each night. Then we would sit in the lobby of GCH and watch old cartoons together.

It’s being replaced by salt and straw which is a more boutique type ice cream shop.

I just figured it would be open a lot longer and that there would be a lot more notice before it closed. Any idea how long until the new place will open?

Salt and Straw is not just another ice cream shop. Salt and Straw is a life changing experience that will completely change your mind about ice cream..... LOL

Glad they got rid of one of the mass market chains. Next up I hope they get rid of the Starbucks and replace it with something far better.

I really liked Haagen Dazs. I'm not a fan of Salt and Straw. I visited one in Portland and after several samples, I still couldn't find something I really wanted to order (and it definitely had a premium price tag). Do I care about Belgian Waffle & Syrup ice cream? It's ok, but I'd much rather have Belgian Chocolate! I think HD has good quality ice cream and I will miss it. S&S seems like a gimmicky kind of thing to me. Maybe I'll go and find out I really do love it, but as of now I'm disappointed in the switch.

I think the full public announcement took a bit but I heard that it was closing this Thursday within a week of the original announcement.

Noooo!!! This was totally on our list of 'must-do's' next trip. Since I heard they are carrying the dairy-free ice creams, we were going to make a stop there so my dairy-allergic little one could feel normal for a change. Guess we'll stick with Dole Whips for her.

The new lemon soft serve in DCA at Adorable Snowman Frosted Treats is dairy free. So now your little one will have two choices at DLR.

Checked out their website. Yuck at the flavors. And NO list of ingredients. Nope.

I liked HD because they are mainly decent, simple ingredients, they are good, and they know what they're doing. Boutique places are flashes in the pan.

And just b/c HD was purchased by someone bigger doesn't mean they act like it. IMO they don't.

I had heard about that, but wasn't sure if it was cross-contamination safe (since they serve regular dairy-based soft serve there, too). The rest of the little stands generally aren't. Such close quarters...

Every report I had heard about the Haagan-Daz scoop shop indicated that they were good with allergy orders.

One reason for the lack of a posted ingredient list might be because Salt & Straw tries to source locally for ingredients. They might not have their sources figured out yet for the DTD location, and their sources may change seasonally or more often than other ice cream shops. If you asked at the DTD shop after it opens, you should be able to get some kind of ingredient list for the flavors available at that specific location.
I agree with you about HD because they were very reliable for a commercial brand. But I'm willing to wait and see about S&S until after they open to see how they try to adapt to their DTD customer base.

Try contacting Disney to see what they say about that. Generally, Disney is pretty good about being aware of allergy issues. I'd be surprised if they hadn't even thought about this. It's not like dairy is a rare allergy.

I think I've emailed Disney about allergy issues too much. When I fill out the form online, I get the standard form letter that they'll respond in a few days. However, they don't call me back anymore (or even bother to email an actual response).

Has anyone heard if they were open early and serving coffee in the morning? I loved the Peet’s at Hagen Daz.

This is exactly how I feel. The S&S flavors are not what I'm interested in. Pear and Blue Cheese ice cream? Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper? That's so not me. Pear, ok. Strawberry, ok. But while I like a nice mix of flavors in my meal, I am much more of a purist when it comes to ice cream and I don't want to throw experimental ingredients in there just to be trendy. Is DTD really a good location for a place like this? I guess we'll find out.

Oh gosh, guys. I get being disappointed when something you love leaves but HD is available in every grocery store. Salt and Straw is such high quality ice cream-it’s fun to try new things on vacation rather than the stuff I can get at home. And if you look, there are some classic flavors in their menu-vanilla, chocolate fudge brownie. I love their creative stuff and my picky kids are thrilled with their other flavors.

Dutch Bros would be a good replacement.
