HA 1 bedrooms at BCV question

Hi! As we are coming closer to our 1st trip in a 1 bedroom, I am wondering what disadvantages there are to getting a HA room if you do not need one. The reason I ask this is last year we had a HA studio and had no space in the bathroom for our toilettries. I assume the bathroom of a HA 1 bedroom would be the same. How about the kitchen area and the closets? Could someone please share experiences with HA rooms, just incase we are given one again. We truly found the lack of counter space annoying since there were three of us and 2 contact lense wearers with solutions and cases and just wondering how a 1 bedroom HA is set up.

Thanks!! :sunny:

We've had acessible two BRs lockouts and the master bedroom is not that different. There is a rollinshower instead of the glassed in cubicle. The other portion still has the jacuzzi tub, sink and cabinets, etc. Closet was basically the same too but may have had some lower shelves....sorry I can't remember.

The kitchen is basically the same too but doesn't have the cabinet under the sink so a chair can pull up....I think. I could be confusing it with the set up at VB though. But for certain, the kitchen was still fine IMO.

Thanks BCV23!
Is there anyone else who has stayed in a handicapped 1 bedroom recently that can tell me if it is really different than a regular 1 bedroom so that if I notice we have been assigned one, I know if I should be concerned? I do not mind the shower stall, even if we did not have the jacuzzi, but lack of counter space and storage space is a bit of a concern for me. Last time DH set up the small ironing board on one of our suitcases and made a little "shelf" for us to put our toilettries, but that was in a studio. Does the 1 bedroom actually have a full size ironing board so we could not do that this time?? I am sorry for all the questions, just trying to be prepared.

Thanks so much!! :sunny:

disgirl, sorry I should have been clearer. A one BR is the same as a master in a 2BR. The accessible 2 BR at BCV are a 1BR and lockout studio combined. The 1BR part is as I described. You will have a jacuzzi tub, shelf and cabinet space in that part of the bathroom and I believe there is a shelf over the sink in the shower room as well. The shower will be a rollin.

I do think there are some dedicated 1BR in BCV but we haven't had one. I'm sure it will have a jacuzzi too, shelves, etc.. There would be no reason for it not to have them as the other part of the bathroom has the accessible shower. Hopefully someone who has been in one of those will chime in. On the other hand, people might not even be aware that they had an accessible BR. :sunny:

We have spent single nights in those accessible studios and I agree that the lack of shelves and only a single hook make it hard for anyone to use. In my opinion it is even more difficult for a disabled person to use those bathrooms than those of us who aren't. :confused3

Thanks again BCV23. It does not sound too different then a regular 1 bedroom. As long as there are some shelves or cabinet space in the bathroom, I will be happy. Maybe we will get lucky and not get one anyway. THANKS ! :sunny:

Sorry to keep this thread going, but I just looked at pictures of regular studios and 1 bedrooms and it looked like they each have vanities outside of the regular bathroom, is that true?

That is what our handicapped studio room was lacking, no sink with space around it for toilettries. It just had a sink standing alone in the bathroom. I imagine a 1 bedroom HA room would only have the regular sink without the vanity in it too. That really can be a drag. I need some counter space in the bathroom or by the sink area. BCV23: I truly appreciate your input on this, but after seeing pictures I am beginning to question the lack of vanity(shelf) area in a HA 1 bedroom. Anyone else stay in a 1 bedroom HA recently that can confirm? Thanks!

Unfortunately I can't answer your question about the layout of the rooms but I got a tip on the resort boards that has been great for me and might help with your concern for vanity space. When I traveled with my nieces and son, there were tons of toiletries. I think we could have filled a closet with the hair products alone. :rotfl:
Someone suggested one of the things you hang on the back of a door with the pockets for shoes.
It has at least a dozen pockets in it and keeps everything organized and out of the way. It was so nice not to have the stuff all over. I use this all the time when I travel. They sell them at the dollar store so they are not a big expense.

Let me try again. In those pictures of 1BR that you've seen, if you notice the jacuzzi tub and sink with cabinets are off the MBR. That is exactly the same in the 1BR portion of accessible lockouts that we've had. So you will have a jacuzzi, sink with cabinets and shelves in that part of the room in the unlikely event that you are assigned an accessible 1BR. Counter space as well.

The second part of the bathroom has a rollin shower and another sink. The watercloset is in that portion of the bathroom. What I don't remember for certainty is if that sink has a shelf above it....but I believe it does for two reasons. Our son always uses that sink as "his" and stores his shaving kit on that shelf. He has never had to leave it in "our" portion of the bathroom. Secondly, I do think I would remember the lack of a shelf just as I can for the dedicated accessible studios we've had. It is memorable in those rooms because it is a pain! But regardless you would have the sink, counter and shelves in the other part of the bathroom.

I really think the reason you are not getting more responses is that most people who have had accessible 1BR probably aren't even aware of it...it is just not that noticeable unlike the dedicated studios which do get complaints.

But I would try not to worry at all....you probably won't get one. :sunny:

Thanks BVC23 for being patient with me and trying to explain again to me. LOL! Now, I get it. It is just when I saw those pictures I then realized what we were missing in our studio (the sink and vanity), I figured the 1 bedroom HA would be like that too. Having that extra sink is nice! Thanks again for setting me straight on that! :sunny:

Have a wonderful vacation at BCV. :cool1: Wish I was going!
