H1N1 Shots

I got the H1N! shot as did my DD and DH. It is a personal decision for sure but we decided to get then since I am pregnant and due very shortly. But I wanted to comment that both I and Dh thought the H1N1 shot hurt a lot less than the seasonal flu shot. neither one of us had a sore arm the next day, unlike when we got our seasonal flu shots in Sept.

I agree. That regular flu shot had my arm sore for at least a full day after getting the shot. H1N1, well, it hurt going on and maybe a little after, but then it wasn't noticable at all and that night and the next day, nothing.

I get intramuscular shots weekly for this pregnancy and they are far worse than the H1N1, but about on par with seasonal flu.

DD got the live H1N1 mist about 2 weeks ago, and about a week later, she was sick. Like a PP mentioned, no telling if it was from the vaccine itself, but I have to wonder. It started as a sore throat and low fever, and turned into a cough, stuffy nose etc. She was out of school for 2 days. Still glad we did the vacc though...

My other DD (10 months) and I had the H1N1 shot yesterday. I woke up this morning feeling like I have a cold, but again, who knows if it had anything to do with the vacc. Still glad we did it. Especially with a trip to Disney and a trip for Christmas coming up, we think the vaccine is definitely a good idea.

It can take up to 2 weeks for immunity so if your DD was exposed to anyone who had H1N1 in the 2 weeks following her shot, she could have contracted it.

I was against the H1N1 vaccine at first, but as time goes on and more is known about it and the flu itself, I decided to get it for DD. My MIL works with our state CDC and is 100% for us getting the shot for DD. She would not let us do anything that would harm DD so I trust her judgement on this one. Now if our pedi could just get the darn vaccine in stock....

I was wary about the H1N1 vac, we all do the seasonal flu shot every year and had that a few weeks ago. I had the appt for DS#2 to get his H1N1 and he got a fever the night before last week so it was put off until tomorrow he has Asthma and while I was not excited to do this vac his ped reminded me that if he gets sick he's admitted his asthma is really nasty.

It kind of worked out tho now they are allowing my older son to get it as well, DH and I recieved it thru work. I know it takes 2 weeks to take affect and we could all end up with it before espeically since DS#1 has kids in his school with it but short of quitting our jobs (both in health care) taking the kids out of school i'm not sure there's anyway to avoid some exposure this year.

We have a WDW trip coming up and I'll be glad we'll all be protected before entering a new petri dish......:)

I just came on here to see if anyone posted anything about this vaccine. I called my dr's office today about it and the doc has to give us clearance for the mist. Are all the mists live vaccines? I am alittle worried but I hope the benefits outway the risks. H1N1 is going around the kids schools like wildfire so I want my kids to be protected especially with our Disney vacation in a month.

Twice DD has gotten the mist and been sick exactly a week after. Once I would have believed it she might have been exposed before she was fully immune, but 2 years in a row, I'm starting to think the mist is making her sick. If it was H1N1, it was a very mild case, so that also makes me lean towards the vaccine. :confused3 Who knows...

Yes, all the mists are live but weakened strains of the flu. I was told by my pedi that the mist is more effective and lasts longer.

Yeah - I would say two years in a row is very strange. Did your DD get any other vacs when she got the flu vacs? The reason I ask if that we noticed that anytime DD got more than 2 vaccines at a time, she would get very sick within a day or two. After her 9 months vacs, we started getting only 2 done at a time and only 1 live at a time. This really helped and she has not had any negative reactions since we made that change.

No, both times were just the nasal mist - last time was seasonal and this year was H1N1. The seasonal this year had no side effects. :confused3 I'm sure we'll never know, but I'll still continue to get her the vaccinations. I'm sure any side effects from the vacc's are much less than the "real thing".

I was on the fence for awhile about this and I even posted on another poll thread that we were undecided. My problem with it was, then (mid-Oct), the only H1N1 vaccine you could get here was the mist vaccine. I did not want my kids to get that one. I know that they recently said it is safe for kids under 5 to have the flu mist vaccine, so the H1N1 mist vaccine should be safe to, but my doctor does not give the mist to kids under 5, and said that she felt it would better for us to wait for the injectable for my youngest child. Our county health dept. are the only ones in the area that are getting the vaccines and the injectable vaccine was availabe starting yesterday. This afternoon, my three kids got the vaccine. As of right now, they all 3 did wonderfully with no side effects. My DD has been asleep since 5:00 (an hour after she got the vaccine), but she didn't nap today and was up quite early as her body hasn't adjusted to the time change, so I am assuming that is what is making her so tired. No fever, no complaints about soreness, no redness or swelling, etc. They are scheduled to return Dec. 3 for their 2nd dose. I decided that I didn't want to risk it...I didn't have peace about my decision to not have them vaccinated and didn't have an overwhelming peace about having them get it either. The only thing that kept nagging at me was that healthy children are dying from it...my kids do not have chronic health issues, but they have been plagued by strep throat this month. I decided that it would be awful if they had come down with H1N1 on top of the strep...I really don't want to compound problems that are somewhat avoidable. Do I feel peaceful about my decison...not exactly, but I think I am a lot more peaceful than I would be if I didn't. I know that probably isn't much help OP, but I hope you can come to a decision that you can live with.

I feel much better now.. we just got back from the Dr. and she is clearing the shot.. and is getting it for her own daughter.. The only problem is now where we can go to find one... is everone out? We are in NJ so if anyone knows any where to get them... please let me know.:goodvibes

I live in NJ and went to Getmyflushot.com -- there is a link to register for h1n1 clinics. There are several throughout the state. We live in point pleasant and there was one at our pharmacy down the street yesterday (which is where we got our shots). You need to go to the clinic location ahead of time and get a voucher. I am wondering if there will be any supply left by the time my kids need the booster in 4 weeks. They have the mist and the injectable - they have preservative free shots for children and pregnant women.

OP: My children and I have asthma. If any of my kids got the swine flu, they would likely be hospitalized. I wasn't comfortable with the vaccine but I also wasn't comfortable with the idea of having kids hospitalized and blaming myself for not getting them vaccinated. So, they got shots yesterday.
