H1N1 flu declared pandemic - how is it in Orlando area?

Hi everyone,
The World Health Organization just declared the H1N1 Flu a pandemic. Does anyone know how severe the outbreak is in the Orlando area? We are scheduled to go there in 10 days.

Is that the same as the CDC...Center for Disease Control? I was not aware that is what they have declared and I live in North Jersey a hop skip and Jump from NYC and for the past few days haven't heard much on it.

So I would double check with the CDC before you get too nervous.

You can click on a state and they'll give you the statistics for that state. The station last reported the 4th case in Central Florida in May. There may have been more.

The CDC is in Atlanta, and a separate organization than WHO. I am a family physician, and there has been less about the flu in the news recently, and fewer patients coming in with flu-like illness. During the month of April, we tested probably 50 people for flu (after the reports of swine flu), and had no positive results.

Pandemic just has to do with spread of the flu to different geographic regions; it doesn't necessarily have to do with the severity of the illness. The H1N1 flu is sensitive to Tamiflu. I was on vacation with my family last week at WDW, and I almost took a prescription of Tamiflu with me, but, then, decided it wasn't worth the copayment when I likely could simply call in a prescription if any of us developed symptoms. It wasn't big in the news in Orlando, either. I heard nothing at all about it in the 45 minutes each day I spent watching the TV while using the elliptical at the gym.

Keep in mind that the vast majority of the people who have swine flu are not being tested and are not showing up on statistics. Only confirmed cases will show up. Many doctors are not testing if there are already confirmed cases in the area.
