H&R Block Fees

Thank you for the input. I really need the cash ASAP but I think I can work out a solution while waiting for the direct deposit. I think I'll stick to an online option as I really don't want to fork over upwards of $200 for an office visit.

I know they say to expect delays from the IRS this year with refunds, and every year for that matter, but I feel like it's much more a reality this year, so that was my main concern with direct deposit this year. I'll wait it out and hope for the best and speediest refund!

I think the earlier you file, there is less chance of a delayed refund simply because fewer people are filing returns. When you get to March, then it slows down, and April just crawls.

I just filed today with H&R online software for free. Had no trouble with it last year. IRS accepted my return within 20 minutes after filing and states typical refund is issued in 21 days direct deposit. I would imagine the rapid refund card will eat up a significant portion of your return. If there is any way you can file now and hold off 3 weeks on whatever you need the cash for, I would recommend that path. Our return is simple standard deduction type, but I find the free software fairly easy to use for that type of return. You need a tax expert if you have business or other complicated tax issues for sure, and not from Block either.

I quit using them after 30 years due to high fees and the incompetency of the preparers. Ours was not that complicated but there was always issues asking supervisors how to complete the forms. Our last bill 3 years ago was over $200. We moved to a CPA who also advised us as I was moving toward retirement. Our bill is now $150. We are never in a hurry to get an advance.

H&R Block hires anyone who pays to take their class. The people who they hire don't know anymore than you do and in most cases are simply entering your info in to the same program that is online.
