gunea pig owners. cage ?

we got our pig in feb when he was so tiny, but now he is definitely bigger and his cage is looking pretty small. I was looking around online and found this http://guineapigcages.com/types.htm that I thought was interesting and we have most of the components already, so could easily give it a try. my question is, do any of you have an open top cage? is it wise? will he really not try to escape? my house is NOT baby/pig proofed, and I really don't want him out wandering around except where we allow him to when we are supervising.

I have this cage for my bunny (he's about the size of a guinea pig). The extra large cage is big enough so he has room to hop around while i'm at school and work all day. It's also super easy to clean since you do not need bedding with it!

They do not climb, they will not escape. I didn't look at these plans, but I had built an open top cage for my two that was probably 12 inches high. There was never any question that they'd get out.

The dog was a problem, though. And if we'd had a cat, we couldn't have done it at all.

But no, they are not athletic at all!

In Ecquador (where guinea pigs are a food souce ) they keep them in open pits that are only a foot or two deep. Guess they don't jump! So you should be fine.....

My guinea pigs are in a grid cage like that but with a lid. I need to keep my dogs out, not keep the pigs in. If I didn't have dogs, there would be no need for the lid. Those fatties aren't going anywhere!

We have a grid cage for our girls also and because we have cats we put a hinged lid on it otherwise we would have left it open, they don't climb like rats and other rodents.

We built a C and C cage for our piggies. We have a dog and don't have a lid. The pigs can't climb out, and our collie doesn't bother the pigs...

thanks all! I am eager to get started on it. I think he will love the added space, and I think the kids will love having him w/o a lid on. will make it easier for them to care for him, etc.
