Hello! I am heading down to Gulfport June 4-10 w/ a group from my church for home rebuilding. I'm trying to decide what all to pack. Will it already be pretty hot by then? What about mosquitos?

Most likely we will be staying in the old Armory building. I doubt it has air conditioning. Think I could get by w/ just a sheet set (bottom and top) or should I pack a blanket? We don't have a ton of room in our van, so I'm trying to pack as lightly as possible.

Thanks for your help!

UPDATE: well, I'm back! We did stay at the armory. Thye had bunk beds in mobile classroom type buildings, and the other people tried to freeze me out w/ the air conditioning! :rotfl: Fortunately, only Thursday 6/8 was really hot (over 90). It was a great trip, and we are already plannin gon going back later. We worked in a house in Long Beach (single lady) and a house in Gulfport (elderly couple, in the Forest Heights section across HWY 49 from Hudson's Treasure Mart). We got a lot done but not as much as we wanted. We may fly next time. If we do, we would be able to stay longer (fly home either Fri night or Sat morning so we could work on Fri). We worked hard, slept very little, and had a great time!

It will be very hot and humid. It seems like we ALWAYS have mosquitoes. Be sure to use repellant...there have been several cases of people around here contracting some nasty things from them. Don't mean to scare you... just wanted to warn you.

I think it's wonderful that you are giving your time and talents to help others. God Bless You.

I don't know about the Armory bldg. Most buildings down here do have A/C, but even if they do, it still might not be working. I don't think you'll need a blanket at all. Right now I could sleep out on my porch without even a sheet. It's really warm in the summer and it doesn't cool down much at night.

Hope some of this helps. I'm not exactly in Gulfport (about 60 miles away) but I thought I could answer some of your questions.

Thanks for the info! Think I will just pick up a twin sheet set and call it good (I decluttered my twins years ago, and we will be sleeping on twin bunks). I will definitely stock up on the skeeter spray (we get them bad here in NC, too!).

God bless you and the many other volunteers who have come here to our coast to help us clean up and rebuild. We could never have gotten as far as we have without all of you! I live in Pass Christian and there is still so much to be cleaned up.
As stated above, it will be very hot and humid when you get here. Hopefully the armory will have working air conditioning. I'm sure they will do their best to accomodate all you wonderful volunteers. Again, thanks so much!

When you get down here if you have time I'd love to meet another diser and say thanks to you personally. Maybe we could get some lunch or something. Pm me if you'd be interested. :teeth:

If it weren't for voulunteers like yourself we wouldn't be close to what we have now. Thank You for your generousity!

Sincerely, Sadie

I doubt I will be able to get together as we will only have the one van and will be doing lunch onsite at the worksite. If this visit goes well, I may be going back another time w/ another group but sorta on my own, so we'll see about that time!

Thanks for the info. If we don't stay at the armory, we will be at Pass Rd Baptist Church. Is that near either of you???

Thanks from another Mississippian! I live in the central part of the state now but grew up in south MS and have seen the devestation first hand. Bring some mosquito repellant, sheet set should be OK, plenty of water and a fan! Just be prepared for what you'll see and remember it's been MONTHS since the storm! It still shocks me when I see it and I can't imagine the day after the storm.

Straitlover,
My husband is down there down rebuilding homes with our church. They are staying in a church hall that was a Katrina shelter. Do you know where you will be staying??? If it's the same place I'll ask him if they have AC or not tonight when he calls.

We will be staying either at the Armory Bldg or at Pass Rd Baptist Church, but we won't find out for sure until a week before we go. Most likely it'll be the Armory as they are trying to move/consolidate everything to there. I did find out late last week from someone who stayed at the armory over Easter that they do have A/C there, woo hoo! I think I'll just take my sheet set and a thin blanket/throw that doesn't take up too much room.

Which group is your hubby working through? I was at a Missions Rally last week and heard a guy speak (the one who told me about the A/C). It shoulds like hard but very rewarding work. I can't wait!

I better get packing! I leave in 2 wks, 3 days!

Dear Brisnamaw.
Half of April we took a wrong turn and landed on the high way that led us along the Gulf shore.
We were shocked, what a devastation !!! Never thought is was so bad.
The beautiful white beaches the houses all gone !!!
I took some pictures and put them on internet for the folks at home.
Look in me web log at dag acht. (day eight).
For your translation I put as texts under the pictures :neither for church nor casino the storm had respect it destroyed everything"". Of course we all saw the pictures of New Orleans but now one tells us the story of the Gulf Coast. Coming from Holland ,behind the dikes so to speak, in this case we where speechless.
You need endless tears and many years to rebuild al of the beauty that’s gone.
May God help and bless you.
