anyone see the segment on CNN about pets being given up due to the oil spill? how heartbreaking!!!!!
I would love to adopt one because they are in a KILL shelter, which means they have about 2 wks to find a home.
I went on the website and it said they will not adopt out individual animals to people out of state:confused3, why not? maybe someone is willing to make the trek down there to get a pet, to save a life?????

but it did say they are sending some to other shelters, so far one in FL and one in TX.

Too sad. Unfortunately it is always a factor in any natural disaster, not that this was a natural disaster, that many people don't think of. I hope they succeed in getting those animals to other shelters, as most people in the areas affected áren't in a position to adopt.
I can't speak for those states but I'm involved with a rescue here and we don't adopt to other states because of different vaccination regulations. However if they go to a rescue in another state then that rescue can get them up to standard for that state if need be.

I feel so bad for those animals and owners, can't imagine having to give mine up to a stranger and not know what happens to them.

Because there are a lot of people that want to adopt these pets for reasons other then having a pet.

this could be true of any shelter anywhere in the USA. anyone can walk into a shelter in their own state with other intentions when they take a pet.
I have been involved in animal rights for long enough to know how some lab animals come to be where they are.

the problem I see is that the area is so hard hit that they will not be able to rehome these pets without going outside that area.
the cnn segment said last june something like 17 animals were surrendered compared to this past june where over 100 animals were surrendered

I didn't think of differing vaccine requirements.
well hopefully shelters from across the us will step in and help out.
I already sent out an email to a local shelter here, that is known for taking in animals from other places, to see if they can help.

Those shelters could really use donations. So if you are able make a donation to help out.

I've been trying to find what other shelters they've sent some of the animals to. Did you see anything specific about that?

I am local, and it pains me to see this story on the news. I am not in a position to adopt another animal at this time, or I would.

Someone (I forget who) has set up a fund to help people with vet care and animal food. They are going down into the immediate areas of the spill and they will be offering free vet care and pet food for those who have documented income loss due to the spill. This is a preventative measure so more people do not need to give up their pets.

I do not know where the pets that are getting shipped out of state are going. I tried to find the story on our local news online to see if there were details, but I couldn't find it.

A guy in my area, Ohio, was put in jail for adopting pitbulls from Katrina-hit areas and training them to fight. Sad but true.

Geez.. I never even thought of that..:( How far will the ramifications of this spill go?? :sad2:
