So sad all around.
A Spotsylvania County jury has found Deanna Large, 37, guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the dog-mauling death of her 82-year-old neighbor. The jury also found her guilty of two misdemeanor charges of allowing her dogs to run free.
The sentencing phase of the trial is set to begin this afternoon. She could get up to 12 years in prison.
This is the first time in Virginia's history that a person has been tried for manslaughter for the actions of a pet.
The jury began deliberating the case this morning.
During the trial, numerous witnesses testified that Large's pit bulls had menaced the rural neighborhood in which she lived. Animal control officers had taken two of her pit bulls away in August 2004 after they allegedly killed a kitten.
