drove off!

I apologize for using my beloved Dis boards for this but I will work this back to Kevin in a minute.

Left the iPad on the roof of the car and then drove 50 miles before I realized what I did. I don't feel tooooo stupid although someone soothed me by saying at least I didn't leave a baby in a car seat up there. Heaven forbid!

After weeping and gnashing of teeth and since I brush my teeth, metaphorically with my iPad, my wife, bless her soul talked me out of buying a refurb and getting the new Air one. It wasn't hard to do that.

You'd need another Dis board to understand and to hear how this went down!

Anyway now I am thinking cases and remember that Kevin recommended a company that made nice cases although maybe not yet for the Air. Does anyone remember the name? I remember it being pricey but hey what the hey I am sooo deep now!

Any advice is appreciated since we are all Dis family.

Ouch! Well, at least there is a shiny new one in your future :cool1::cool1:

Just don't forget to use find my iPad to remove your personal stuff in case the person who finds it can still get in to it.

I don't remember if this is the company that Kevin liked or not, but I have a case for my eReader from Oberon Designs, and they do *magnificent* work! Very attractive and functional cases in fine tooled leather in several colors and patterns. I can *HIGHLY* recommend them! It does not look like they have covers available for the iPad Air yet.

(Actually, they mention the weight of the Air with the cover on, so they probably are working on them, or maybe have a limited number so far.)

Sayhello

I did the lock my iPad when it is opened with a message to please return it by calling number I left on it. Offered a reward too.

It could be on any highway and by way from here (Long Island) into Queens, NYC. Likely crushed as well.

I think Kevin was talking Oberon. Sounds right.

Keven had gotten an Oberon cover for his first iPad.

Kevin's also mentioned the book book from twelvesouth.com and the Tumi case

The Book Book iPad case does not require you to take the iPad out of your case to take a photo while holding your iPad above your head:

And this is a timely (but sore) promotional blog post by Twelve South: http://blog.twelvesouth.com/bookbook-for-ipad/bookbook-saves-ipad-from-freeway-fall/

It doesn't look like Twelve South has made an iPad air case, yet.

I was tempted to get the iPad air but (1) I would have to buy a new case and (2) I really like my current iPad.

I was all set to do an iPad 4 refurb. Long story. Worse part is that I don't know when I will get it.

But I had just gotten a 5S and must say that its performance is very impressive. The new iPad will have the same guts. Wouldn't say that it is a reason to get a new one though unless you leave your perfectly good one on the top of your car roof like someone I know.

Well...this seems like as good of a time as any to ask....
Could you let us know how that conversation with the wife went? (And be specific please....very specific...just "in case" some of us might "accidentally" drop our IPad off of a bridge..or overpass...)...:rolleyes

Disclaimer: The afforementioned "some of us" could actually be ANY of us, (right Amy?)....

Dang that stinks...but I wouldnt mind getting an Air. I am still using my original launch day ipad and since it still works so well I just cant bring myself to get a new one....maybe I'll 'accidently' leave on top of my car

That hurt me just hearing about it, "Patty" and I haven't been separated for more than a couple days. But at least it wasn't your wife's iPad!

It's only awkward when you leave your wife's iPad on the car. :stir:

Oberon Designs makes gorgeous leather covers.

They are well made and last forever.

The problem I had with mine is that it was heavy and hard to fold back on itself.

It was great for my Kindle....but too heavy for my iPad.

You are buying an AIR because of it's lightness. Why add a heavy cover?

If you want a lighter cover, look at Twelve South. They make covers that
look like antique books.

Hope that helps.

Well it's really very easy, if you knew me you'd know anyone who is married to me is a SAINT!:)

I just got off the phone after having finished ordering a refurb which amounted to about $200 less than the Air. Told her what I had ordered.

She said (sic) "No one died, no one was hurt, except your pride, get the better one and we will do what we have do." I didn't give her much time to change her mind.

There's a bit more to the story: I had told my son in law last evening that I had retraced my car path up the street from my home to no avail. He left, then came back about 10 minutes later.

He said, "Pop, I know you are very upset about losing your iPad so I got you another one." Well It was about 8:30 at that point and he completely floored me.

But then he said that he knew that I am a pretty fast driver. He drove up my block to the service road of the highway and accelerated to 50 miles an hour. When he got to 50, he stopped (luckily no traffic), opened the door and looked around.

Sure enough there it was. Pretty much flattened like a pancake although not totally.

If I knew how to post a pic here I would but suffice to say, it was recognizable but certainly never a candidate for refurbishment or much of anything else.

So the good news is that I don't have to worry that someone had found it and was into my personal stuff (although I had locked it) and the good news is that I am fortunate enough to get another one. The waiting will be the hard part now.

On another note, for those of you who have wifi and a cellular model as this one was I just learned that you should keep your cellular operating all the time which I never did. I only turned on cellular when I couldn't get wifi.

But as the Apple tech told me, they would not be able to Find My iPad if the cellular was not on and no wifi was accessible.

Doubt a flattened one would have broadcast anything except "Help!":)

After doing exactly the same thing with my iPhone, I invested in an Otterbox case. Since then, I upgraded to a Lifeproof case, since the Lifeproof is way less bulky and is water/dirt/shock/prettymucheverything proof. I like being able to take my phone everywhere (read: on rides with water!) and not worry about it. I HIGHLY recommend the Lifeproof. Love it!

My lost iPad story wasn't so dramatic as leaving on top of my car or anything but it was as depressing. It happened last year while coming back from Disney world. I had flown Delta and had to change planes in Atlanta as usual to head home. Anyway I had put my iPad in the seat pocket in front of me and yes the cellular part of my ipad was turned off during flight. In the rush to get to my next flight I left my iPad in the seat pocket. I realized the mistake when I got to the lounge to grab a drink because my flight was delayed to home. Long story short the ipad was a lost cause because someone picked it up more likely between my leaving the aircraft and it being towed to the hanger. I ended up getting a new ipad and locked and dumped the memory storage on the old one.

Some 10 years ago, I left my HP Pocket PC in a plane pocket in San Francisco (I was fortunate that the airline retrieved it for me). I have never put another electronic device in a plane pocket ever since.
