Can anyone tell me about GTY rooms. I understand that you do not receive your cabin number until you check in, but I guess my question is why?

Thanks for your help!

Like with the airlines, the cruise lines overbook. There is a certain percentage of people who book that cancel their cruise prior to sailing. If you're given a Category Guarantee, that usually means that all of the rooms in your category have been assigned to other guests, but some rooms are likely to become available via cancellation prior to your sailing. If not, they'll bump you up to a higher category.

Thanks Dave!

If I'm booked in a Category 4 GTY, I can't imagine being bumped to a 3 -- does that ever happen?

Thanks!

They do occasionally happen, but not very often. Disney has gotten quite good at determining exactly how many cabins to book. (But there is always hope - :D)

I was also given a GTY room when I booked my $99 voucher room for a cat11. We called as soon as we returned home from our Jan 13th cruise, so I can't imagine why they just didn't assign a room then.

Teri,

I would imagine they didn't assign you a specific Cat 11 room because they are hoping to sell all the Cat 11 rooms at the regular rate rather than the $99/person rate.

For example, if Joe Public called tomorrow to book a cruise for that same time and says he'd only take a Cat 11 - he's not willing to pay for a Cat 10 or 9. However, his $499 a person for a Cat 11 is better than getting nothing at all (if he wouldn't be willing to accept paying more for a higher Cat). The $499 is also better than they'd be getting for the $99/person deal. So they'll take his payment for the last Cat 11 room left and upgrade you to a Cat 10. Hmm.. not sure if I explained that clearly. But it makes sense to me! LOL.

I don't know about the rest of you, but if I found out that I paid "X" amount of dollars for a cat. 11 and someone that paid $99.00 for the same category got upgraded, then I think I would be pretty P.O.D. It should be the person paying the higher price getting the upgrade before the lower price! Just my honest opinion here!

or better yet...
the person like me who booked 26 mos in advance :D

The $99 voucher is a whole different thing. They are assigning it to GTY until your voucher arrives, as soon as they have your voucher, they are varifing that everything is set up correctly and then they will assign it to the actually room # they are giving you. It is not the same as GTY is any other case, which means what Dave said previously.

I agree with LibertyBelle. We had GTY until everything cleared on our $99 voucher. When we recently checked our reservation on line (DCL), GTY been changed to a valid stateroom number.

Cruise, That makes a lot of sense thanks for explaining it to me.

LibertyBelle, They already received my voucher I called to see. I also have received my confirmation letter. It still says GTY for room. It really makes no difference to me wether I am upgraded or not. They could put me in a cat 12 for all I care. I actualy like the layout of the cat 12's better. I also like one bathroom rather than the split bathroom, more room in the bathroom.
