I installed the service pack 2 for windows xp yesterday. Immediately after restarting the computer, I notice a second set of computer icons in my task bar with a yellow explanation point. This is telling me that the Local Area Connection is "limited or no connectivity". I obiviously CAN connect to the internet, yet this thing will not go away. I right clicked this icon, told it to "repair" and I get another message, telling me it "can not renew the ip address". I call Verizon, they tell me it's not their issue". I call computer tech support, they tell me it's an E-Machines issue. I contact their chat tech support. They tell me to unistall the LAN network connection, then restart. Tried that...............still have that stupid little explanation point!!:earseek:

Has this happened to anyone else?? :badpc:

i've had all kinds of problems with it. to quote bill clinton: "i feel your pain." :p

DH works for an IT company and is an IT professional. He told me that a memo was sent to everyone in the company not to install Service pack 2 because of the problems.

Me too. Everyone that I have talked to said "It's not their problem". I have Cox internet service.

I called Verizon back and told them that it IS their problem (the ip address thing). After testing how well the computer "pinged", it is clear that there is no problem with the internet connection (now, I could of told them that  ). When I asked him why the icon with the explanation point (LAN limited??), he simply said that there was nothing to worry about.....something about whatever connection this is showing does not pertain to me and it is just something that SP2 has left behind.

Beats me.............as long as I can still connect, I'm happy!! :sunny:

I downloaded and installed it last week. There seems to be alot of quirks......and the built in firewall is a pain.
It also adversly affected a few of my other programs.

I did a Restore Point restore and got rid of it. I'll wait awhile now till the bugs are fixed.

I just asked DH about this because I thought he did the update earlier this week. He did, but also uninstalled it because he was having problems.

I started to down load it and when I told my husband he told to stop the download and not to install it. He saw something on tech tv that said it was a nightmare update and that I did not want to have it on my computer. I don't remember details because half the time when he starts talking about stuff like that all I hear is blah, blah, blah... :p but he said something about the update having some kind of built in fire wall or something or other and it does cause problems with internet connectivity, etc.

I downloaded it last week, looks like I got lucky, everything seems to be working just fine on my computer.

One nice change with it is with Outlook Express, instead of the pictures automatically showing in my emails, there is a line of words above the email that says 'some pictures have been blocked to prevent the sender from identifying your computer. click here to download pictures'... one click on the words and the pictures show up..
some spam can be pretty graphic, nice to not have to see what you didnt ask for.

Other than that and the initial pop up screen that showed the security settings, I dont notice it on my computer at all.

I have tried to restore to an earlier point, but somehow, there are NO OTHER restore points before the 15th, when I installed this thing. It took me forever to even get the computer to the desktop this morning.

have you tried restoring it to the 15th.. i had created a restore point b4 i downloaded knowing how microsoft can be glitchy on thier updates... but i remember when installing it, that the install also created a restore point, giving me two of them for the day..

so, that restore point on the 15th may be right b4 u installed the service pack, u may want to give it a try.

*cough*control panel*cough*

Go to add/remove programs in the control panel, select Windows XP Service pack 2 (or simply SP2) and remove it :)
