The first week of June JC Penney had a sale on their Docker clothing, and an offer (thru Docker) for a free 7" portable DVD player with the purchase of $100 worth of Docker clothing. DW and I carefully read the small print, and made our purchase; the sales rep smiled at us when checking out and said, "Congratulations! You qualiy for a DVD player!"; DW, who is anal retentive about such things, fills out the paperwork and sends it off the next day...

WELL, today we get and email saying we did not make a qualifying purchase and would not be receiving a DVD player! What the...?!! :confused3 :confused3 To make matters worse, we cannot reply to the email notification :furious: . So, I'm just letting you guys know, tomorrow some lucky person at JC Penney is probably going to be the recipient of a good old-fashioned chewing out. I haven't done such a thing in a long time, but I feel a good stem-winder coming on tomorrow.

The only reason I bought the stupid Dockers was for the DVD player!

I particpated in a Dockers/Tivo promotion last year and had no problems. I gave it to my dgf's mother for Christmas AND since I didn't like some of the $100 worth of Dockers clothes, I returned them and still got the free Tivo.

(didn't mean to rub salt into your wound)

I'm waiting on my email. I am not the luckiest person on the planet, so if there is ANY way to mess up qualifying, I bet I've done it. I, too, chose Dockers at that time and in quantity in order to get the Portable DVD player. I read the small print over and over, etc. Did the email say what you didn't do correctly? Like "Your qualifying purchases did not total $100 BEFORE taxes." Or "You did not include the original receipt." SOMETHING!

charade, no problem... Not being able to even reply to the "rejection" email (much less call and talk to a person) seems like shockingly bad customer service.

No details. It just said "you did not make a qualifying purchase" :confused3 As I mentioned in my OP, DW is exteremely careful with stuff like this. She is the world's best at reading fine print, meeting deadlines, filling our correct paperwork, etc. Luckily she made a copy of our receipt (sent original in for DVD program). Upon reviewing the receipt copy tonight I am mystified as to what the problem could be.

I am worried, then, too. I got bought ONLY Dockers shorts and pants, totalling $101.38 before taxes.

I often wonder if, with rebates and things like that, companies just randomly pick a certain percentage to NOT honor. THere have been rebates in the past that I have gotten the "Dreaded" postcard that they could not honor my rebate requests.

I am curious to see what they tell you when you do get a hold of a person!

If there is no explanation, I'd contact the Bureau of Consumer Affairs and file a complaint.

I was going to do this, but I chickened out! I guess that was the right thing to do! :confused3

Go over to the budget board and look for a similiar subject. There is a link to the Rebate Agency maybe you can contact them through that.

So, return the clothes and just go buy a portable DVD player if you want one. You can probably get one for close to $100.

The only problem is that I should receive the clothes AND the dvd player -according to the advertised offer

But according to your OP, you didn't even want the clothes. Seems like the long way around and apparently a whole lot of hassle to get a portable DVD player that you could have just gone to Best Buy and bought in 15 minutes for about the same price.

Well it is something to think about just in case the matter isn't resolved timely and to your satisfaction. Good luck.

:badpc: I will try to lay this out in a detailed fashion :laundy: . I would not normally buy Docker clothes because I find them to be a bit overpriced. I am a Wal-Mart kind of guy (boy, I'm really confessing now). However with the offer of clothes AND a free DVD player that is about the same value of the clothes, it seemd like a good deal to me. Thus I purchased the items with the idea that I would receive some quality clothing AND a portable DVD player for $100. Without the clothes OR the DVD player the transaction would be somehow incomplete. I did not purchase the clothes OR the DVD player. I purchased both. I really hope this explains why this is something worth pursuing. You may be young and/or inexperienced in this sort of thing, and I truly do not wish to be condescending if that's the case.

Ya know... it's kind of like false advertising. I say I'm gonna sell you an apple and an orange for $2, but I give you only the orange. Would you still feel as though I owed you an apple?

Postscript to the story: I called the phone # listed on another thread by another person having problems; the redemption center asked that I send in the copy of the receipt that I had saved and they would certify my qualifying purchase. I sure am glad it worked out that way. I didn't even have to go to the mall!
