Growth of puppies....help.

When our dog was little she was eating between 3/4 and 1 1/4 cups of puppy food (Nutro Puppy Lamb and Rice--her breed tends to have corn allergies so we are staying away from anything with corn). We leave food down all day but she doesn't snack, she eats about 3 times a day now, morning, afternoon, evening even if there is food in the bowl. We started taking her bowl up but noticed that she didn't free feed so we just leave it down.

She was about 5 pounds when we got her at 12 weeks, she is now 10-11 pounds and probably close to full grown at 9 months although she might fill out some, she is pretty petite (she is a Rat Terrier). She isn't eating as much these days because she isn't as active, she tore a ligament in her knee and can't run around as much. She eats about 1 cup/day, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. Her weight is appropriate for her.

You have to take into account your dogs activity level as well. If she is running around playing all day, she will eat more, if she is a lay on the couch and snooze all day type dog, she will eat less.

I wanted to post a little update. We went to the vet yesterday and she was 3 pounds 8 ounces (she gained 1 pound since we were last there 2 weeks ago.) The vet said her actual weight wasn't really as big of a concern as her body shape. He explained how you should be able to feel the ribs easily, but not see them. How you should see a defined waist, and that their spine should be slightly raised from the rest of their body. He said she looked great. He also mentioned what another poster on here mentioned that there really is no growth chart and if there were one they would have to have one for each individual breed. Thanks everyone for the help. However, now from reading this thread (and another recent one) I'm wondering if we should maybe change food.

Well, we had our vet appointment last Wednesday. Our little cocker is 13 pounds 10oz and at six months, just about full grown. Looks like she will be a little one. She's in good health too. She is scheduled to be spayed next month. When we purchased her from the breeder, we signed a contract agreeing to have her spayed. Since we are moving, my computer has been disconnected and I'm checking emails from the library. I won't be on here much. But thought I'd check in. SRUAlmn, hope things go well with your little pup.

Here an an excellent cocker spaniel forum for you. It is run by a wonderful breeder. If you have any questions, they are more than happy to help.

Just introduce yourself. Add a picture of your sweetie and ask away.

My aunt wh0 is very into animals and dogs swears by giving them boiled carrots as a supplement to ease their hunger. I did it with one dog and it seemed to work.

Thanks everyone for the info! I'm out of town right now, but I will definitely check out that cocker spaniel forum when I have some free time. It looks great! :)
