I just found out that I was selected to be one of the attendees at the Ground Zero ceremony this coming Thursday, 9/11. Part of me was so happy with the news. A number of you already know I lost a number of friends two years ago, and subsequently volunteered overnight shifts at the site immediately after the tragedy. From time to time, as the date draws closer, I feel pangs in my heart, much like a large number of my fellow DIS members. And being at the service and ceremony will definitely bring further closure to this chapter in my life.
That being said, I'm also incredibly nervous. I have to represent my coworkers and follow Ground Zero volunteers. I have to "show New York pride". Stand tall. Be strong. But I'm just so anxious that I might break down. I'm not ashamed of crying. I just don't want to do it in the most most nationally visible moment.
I already accepted. It's an amazing honor. I guess I'm just asking you all to send a little pixie dust my way that I keep it together.
And on this note, I also ask that you reach over and hug your spouse, boy/girlfriend, partner, mother, father, daughter, son, cousin, in-law, uncle, aunt, neighbor and friend. Tell them you care about them. You never know what's going to happen tomorrow so make sure you love them today.
And on Thursday, September 11, don't dwell too hard on the past. Send a prayer out in your heart. And give a total and complete stranger a smile, huge and beaming like the sun, or small and quiet. But give a stranger a smile. That's the best way to remember our friends, neighbors and love ones.
Wishing you all a safe and peace filled week.
Be well everyone.
