Gross... warning... infection...

If it is Molluscum Contagiosum don't just wait it out. That is stinky. We did and it spread and caused DD all sorts of discomfort, etc. We used Zymaderm and it worked on clearing it. DD got it from her BFF. Children can spread it to others. Google Zymaderm and go to the website, all the info on it and pics are there.

It IS contagious. That is what the "contagiosum" part means.

I would love to see a pic , im a nurse practitioner, i like the gross stuff:rotfl:

My daughter also had Molluscum Contagiosum. Her doctor said we could take her to a dermatologist and they would prick them with needles to pop. Knowing our daughter, that was NOT an option. We waited them out.

I think she started getting them on the insides of her thighs when she was 8 yo. and they disappeared on their own when she was 10. They never bothered her unless they got infected (a couple did once), and those were cleared up with an antibiotic.

I researched on the web about it, and discovered that some products advertised to clear it up work for some people and some for others, but nothing absolutely works for everyone.

They are ugly and they are contagious, but that never stopped my dd from swimming and wearing shorts in the summer. As a matter of fact, I think the sun exposure and swimming ultimately helped to dry them out.

Just make sure your son doesn't share a bathing or swimming towel with anyone else (although we weren't too adamant about this, even after we knew what it was, and no one else ever got it).

If it spreads to the face, then immediate medical attention is warranted as it can wreak havoc there. My daughter's case never went higher than her wrists. Like I said, we left hers alone, and they're gone now and you'd never know she had them - no scars.

If that is indeed what he has - it sounds like it, but you definitely need a dr's dx for it - relax, keep an eye on it, and know that it WILL go away eventually, even if it seems to take forever.

My mother, a nurse, saw it one day and absolutely freaked. She couldn't believe what I told her the dr. said and thought I should take dd to the dermatologist. She nagged at me FOREVER about it. She is definitely old school, believing that drugs can cure anything. Our ped. is wonderful. They take the conservative, natural approach whenever possible.

Good luck, and let us know what the dr. says.

Seems like I got better information on the DIS than from my daugher's pediatrician  . Thanks :) .

Do you mind if I ask what the bumps looked like before? My 3yo has some small bumps on his side and on his arm. Like about 7 total. They're about the size of a zit and that's kindo f what they look like except they're not red. He's had them for several weeks. They're not getting bigger and they don't hurt. But they're also not going away.

It sounds like Molluscum to me. Same with the OP.
Ds had them for a couple of years and finally we had a dermatologist give us a prescription.

It may not be the same as what the OP's DS has but it sounds like your son has the same thing as my DD on her right shoulder. They look like zits but don't pop and have been there for the past few months. One might go away but then a new one might form. I took her to the doctor last week and she told me it was meluscum(sp?). It's a form of wart that children sometimes get. They go away on their own after a while. They may form on the arm and go down the side of the body. She said you could have them removed but there really wouldn't be a point since they go away on their own.

A child can't spread it to another child but they can spread it to another part of their body. She said's it's nothing major and only becomes a problem if it ends up on the face to which you would then have to see a dermatologist.

They are very contageous. I felt horrible when DS spread them to another family, since I knew they took so long to get rid of. :guilty:

I just looked those up. I always thought those were skin tags. Guess not.

Could easily be generic staph or, at worse, MRSA. If its been around for a while, take your child to a real physician.

Im in agreement with the thought its a staph infection at this point. It was probably fairly benign at first but has since become infected, staph is common enough. Try soaking the area with a hot wash cloth which will help draw out the infection and then cover it with a bandaid and anti bacterial cream. Dont be surprised if the other bumps become infected. staph is often resistant to treatment so you have to be diligent! Dont use the washcloth that was near the infection until it has been bleached and washed in hot water.

What's wrong with peroxide??

Probably because when you put it on an infected wound, it stings and foams. Mostly the stinging. But you can tell it's doing its job. Another product that's good although harder to find is Apinol. Great antiseptic.
