Grocery Stores

Does anyone know of any grocery stores between the Orlando Airport and WDW? We wanted to stop and get water and other stuff on our way to the resort.

There are a lot of grocery stores: 2 near the entrance to Downtown Disney, and others on Rte. 192. If you are taking a cab or town car, the driver will know. Otherwise, you can search the Target and Wal-Mart websites for exact directions, I believe they have "Super" versions of their stores very near WDW.

There is a Publix near Disney too. I know that a lot of the towncar services stop there. (Exact directions I can be of little help on - sorry)

The Publix isn't far from WDW, and it is a very nice grocery store; but travel to and from can be a real pain because of traffic backups for the outlet malls near it. (And if you go on a Saturday or Sunday, watch out for Mass traffic at Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine -- backs up the whole length of Little Lake Bryan.)

Winn-Dixie (on Apopka Vineland, just north of Goodings, on the east side of the road) has much easier access. (And you can take the "back door" to get to your resort -- 535 north (which picks up where the Palm Parkway leaves off) to Buena Vista Drive (turn left) and in through the WDW "warehouse district" (which is a public thoroughfare -- and kind of fun to see). If you have a rewards card, the Winn-Dixie prices can be better than Publix. I rather enjoy having a Winn Dixie card -- makes me feel like a WDW local -- and will make Florida seem closer when I catch sight of it in my wallet on a snowy winter day. You go to
Winn-Dixie Reward Card Application to apply. They mail you the card for free. I saved $12 on one $60 purchase. (Publix doesn't have a discount card system.)

The problem with the Super Wal-Mart is that it is a complete madhouse -- in the jammed parking lot and in the aisles choked with shoppers (not to mention the long lines). And it seems to be like that whether you visit at 9:00 a.m. or 11:00 p.m. It is also full of Universal people (shudder). Just kidding. Sort of.

Winn-Dixie is especially good if your needs are basic. If you're going to be doing a lot of cooking, Publix might be better (be sure to pick up some of their free shopping list forms -- fun to use back at home). If you go to Super Wal-Mart, have someone waiting for you back in the room with a stiff gimlet.

From the airport traveling along 417, exit John Young Parkway. Turn right at the light (heading south). a couple of stop lights down you will see Publix on your right hand side.

No unnessessary traffic ... and easy in, easy out.
You will also find the prices are reasonable.

thanks for the heads up on the Winn-Dixie Rewards Card.

We usually shop the Super Wal-Mart between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at night. I have to honestly say that the store is never that busy. We are in and out with a cart full of groceries in less than 20 minutes. Compared to Publix we save anywhere between $15-$20 in groceries. We use to go to Publix and purchase the same things we do now at Wal-Mart. The price at publix was always around $85.00 Now at Wal-mart are cost is always under $60.00. Big difference.

We only wanted a few things from our stop like water and soda so it will be a quick in and out, but I didn't want to get stuck paying prices like $6 for soda. (For that price you might as well buy it in the park). I also wanted something on the way so I wouldn't have to spend a lot of my vacation time searching for a grocery store! Thanks!
