Hello.

When we go to Orlando on 28th July '05 me & 10 others will be in a villa for 2 weeks.

On my last holiday I stayed in hotel & therefore ate out the whole time but this year we will be eating some meals at 'home'.

My question is how much can we expect to pay at the supermarket? Of course most of you wont have been lucky(?) enough to be staying with 1 DF & 10 future in-laws but a general idea would be appreciated. Especially regarding bottle of beer & wine.

Thankyou.

It depends on the supermarket. The one right close to WDW, charges the most (big suprise) We usually go to Publix, which has prices comparable to her in Ohio. About $10.00 for a case of beer, at least Mic Ultra, which is what we get. I know we bought a few bottles of wine, but cannot remember how much we spent.

stay away from Goodings. They are really expensive! I don't know the exact price of beer and wine, but most of the other area stores are pretty much what you would pay in an average US grocery store.

Beer is so expensive in FL!! We drink mainly Beck's or Heineken and in FL we have payed close to $20 for a 12 pacK!! I think Winn-Dixie or Publix has the best prices for liquor!! Wal-Mart in my opinion is so overpriced!! :flower:

Try looking at the grocery circulars to get a good idea. Here are some of the websites:

Albertson's http://albertsons.dailyshopper.com/index.aspx?pagename=storefinder&zipcode=32837

Winn Dixie http://winndixie.dailyshopper.com/index.aspx?pagename=shopmain&storeid=1028744&zipcode=32837&sf=true

As for liquor stores, some of the larger chains are:

ABC Wine & Spirits http://www.abcfws.com/cgi-bin/zipfind_locator.exe/locator/

JD Penguins (don't know about their website)

I don't know about the liquor stores in Orlando, but in Tampa/Clearwater, I tended to stay away from the JD Penguins, since they usually were not as nice as the ABC.

HTH!

Best prices on beer can usually found at an idependent convenience store. Next best at other convenience stores like 7-11 and gas stations. The grocery stores are usually a little higher.

For food, best prices are at Walmart Supercenter and Winn Dixie. Kash N Karry and Publix are a little higher. Stay away from Goodings. I would actually suggest trying to find a grocery store a little farther from WDW as prices do vary at the same chain depending on location.

Several people have suggested in other threads to check the website for netgrocer.com (I think it's .com--could be .net) to get an idea of brands available in the US so you know what you are looking for. Grocery stores here tend to come in two sizes: large and huge! You can spend a lot of time just trying to find what you want, and even more time comparing ingredients or prices. Add lack of familiarity with the brands, and you'll either drive yourself crazy or be in heaven! :)

I haven't checked their pricing, but I'm guessing it's probably about the regular price for staple goods in the large grocery chains. Produce, dairy and meat/seafood prices change regularly, depending on supply and demand.

Publix, Albertsons and Winn-Dixie are the major grocery chains in the Orlando area, and have decent prices. WalMart and Target super centers tend to have slightly better prices overall on staple products (frequently larger sizes than one might want on holiday), and it's a matter of opinion whether their perishables are comparable in quality to the other stores. It's probably pretty much equal pro and con!

Goodings, which is at the Crossroads Center just outside DTD, is an independent store (chain?) and has significantly higher prices, particularly for items geared toward tourists. Other things are at the high end of the independent store/convenience store range (significantly higher than the major grocery chains). Found some of their baked goods and produce to be fairly resonably priced, though. Particularly when weighing the cost of purchasing it there for the last day or two of my holiday, rather than driving a bit farther. Just a matter of priorities!

Overall, Orlando prices are a bit high by my standards, as I live in an area with very competetive grocery prices.

Goodings is close, but very pricey... I didn't buy beer, but the wine was outrageous (but I bought it anyway). :rotfl2:
