wow. i just saw the documentary the other day on dvd. i could not believe this guy was touching, singing, swimming with wild grizzlies. it was amazing to see. what was more amazing is how long he actually got away with it -13 summers. he was even a consultant to disney during the making of brother bear.
i felt his girlfriend could not have had amore terrifying ending to her life. watching her boyfriend being attacked and dragged off in the middle of the night during a rain storm out in the middle of nowhere...
has anyone seen it?

I have not seen it but I saw a review on it a couple of months ago on ICF's Henry's Film Corner. He highly recommended it. I'd like to check it out. The footage shown on HFC looked very interesting.

That is so funny that you mention this. My sister was telling me about this a couple days ago. I don't think I could watch it though. She said that you don't see anything at the end,but hear the audio. Was it hard for you to watch?

I watched a special about it on one of the news programs. I agree. What he was able to do with those animals was amazing. Unfortunately, they are wild animals.

The reporter listened to the tape that was made during the attack that killed him and his girlfriend. The girl's mom has it. It only has audio because of the way the camera fell on the ground. The mom has never listened to it. The reporter was visibly upset after listening to it. He made the mom promise him that she would never listen to it. It must be horrific. I can't think of anything worse than being eaten alive.

It was very good but the end was a little disturbing. I seem to remember the reporter couldnt even make it all the way through the tape.

I saw most of it (I fell asleep). It was an excellent film, the bears and the scenery were beautiful, but this poor guy HAD to have a diagnosable illness.

We watched it 2 weeks ago on the Discovery Channel. I feel they really protrayed both sides of the story. They had one local Alaskan that said they guy considered himself a bear. He didn't feel he was a human being anymore and that was when he endangered himself more to the bears. He also said he got away with his behavior with the bears because the bears thought he was some kind of "cracy" "loco" thing and they basically left him alone.

One of the commentary persons said they have a theory that one of the old bears that was taped by him, actually did the attacking. The old bear knew its prey and that is why the bear went after him. The commentator said it happened very fast-and he pleaded with his girlfriend to run, but for some reason she didn't.

The Commentator told the person to get rid (destroy) the tape-and it will be a closure for her and put everything to rest.

I have seen it and it is a very good movie. We actually rented it. My son liked it alot too.

It's not gruesome at all. You don't hear the audio that was recorded. There is one scene where he gets angry and lets loose with a stream of F-words but that's the only thing that might be offensive to some.

I'm not sure about this guy. He seemed a little off. But although the story is sad, I think he died doing what he loved. He knew it was risky and it was a chance he took.

I didn't really like it. The guy just seemed to be in his own little world...it was a little creepy to me.

Also, some of the scenes were weird in that the interviews sounded scripted? I can't explain it well.

I saw this on the Discovery Channel as well. It was so amazing to see how he could approach those wild bears. He did what he loved and for that you have to admire him for. But unfortunately no matter what, they are still wild animals which no one can predict what would happen. I mean look at Siegfried and Roy and they have tamed and trained those tigers since they were born and he still got attacked.

I watched it twice. It was so incredibly interesting. It was amazing how close this guy actually came to be to the bears. He was a complete nutcase, living in his own little world, but it was a great show to watch.

being eaten alive.

it's ironic he was killed by the very animals he was trying to protect. the documentary is very good, but I don't think other people will be rushing off to follow in his footsteps.

Yes, we rented this movie and then last weekend watched it again on Discovery Channel. I found it to be both disturbing and fascinating--like a train wreck. I do think he was definitely out there ("Mr Chocolate" and Timmy the Fox) and in someways considered himself invincible. He does seem, however, that he did protect the grizzlies. When he was alive, no bears had been poached but since his death I think they said like there had been 13.

Those bears were pretty safe on that isolated island. I'm not so sure they needed protecting. In fact, the only bear killed by humans AFAIK was the one that ate him. Now that's ironic.

Umm, actually there have been many that have been killed since his death. While he was "protecting" them, however, there were none.

exactly how i felt about it. his girlfriend who was with him at the time was reported of actually being afraid of the bears. acouple of scences in the movie has her looking tense as she watches a grizzly not far off.
i know he was 'out there' and had a past of drug/alcohol abuse (sobered up -he made a promise to the bears he would not drink anymore) but his girlfriend had a masters in biology. so she was intelligent..why didn't she know better?

Yep, I thought the same thing. Plus if she was so fearful of the grizzlies, why did she even go, not once, but twice? I think she was just rightfully fearful where he just felt some sort of weird kinship with the bears.

OT:that picture in your signature is adorable. I hope you have that framed and hanging in your home. :thumbsup2

I am sure he was not happy to be eaten alive. That's obviously not what I meant. He knew the ricks he was taking. He mentions it several times in the tape. I guess it's like a police officer or a firefighter or a soldier. They do what they do because they believe in it and they love it even though there's always the chance that the very thing they love will be the death of them.
