Hello DISers for those of you guys who grind coffee is it better to grind it as you use it or grind it all at once? I ask because I was at Costco and saw the Organic coffee beans I usually just buy the caned coffee, I have never bought beans and decide not to purchase because I do not have a grinder, upon leaving I noticed two huge grinders, I asked and they informed me those were for the customers to use for their coffee beans. Before taking the plunge I wanted to know from you guys first, DH swears its much better than canned:confused3 TIA

I am admittedly not a coffee connoisseur (though I have a better than average working knowledge of beans and I am married to a connoisseur), so take my opinion for what it is worth. I think that when beans are ground makes a difference, but for an undeveloped palate like mine, it isn't a huge, huge difference. That said, the closer you can grind the bean before brewing, the better. Fresh ground beans are the best but grinding at the store is going to be better than pre-ground packages.

I use only whole beans. SO much better than the pre ground stuff. No comparison really. I grind them fresh just before using...optimal flavor that way. I have a relatively inexpensive Mr. Coffee grinder (I paid less than $10 for it), and it has lasted me for years. One grinder full makes one pot of coffee. :-)

I use the kirkland brand (the precise country of origin varies from time to time). I get the dark roast, although they also sell a medium roast, and I pay about $4 a pound for it in the three pound bag.

Coffee tastes much better when it's fresh grinded. I would recommend you go ahead and try it, like you said, Costco have those grinders you can use, also, most grocery stores do too. I haven't tried their organic coffee, I love coffee  and I like to try different ones, last week I bought a bag of Dunkin Donuts and I have been plesantly surprised with it.

Let me know if it is any good. Enjoy :goodvibes

thank you all so much I see its according to preference(sp) so I guess from what I gather here I can either grind it before I brew or grind the whole bag at the store.I LOVE coffee so this will be new to me:lovestruc

Personally I don't drink coffee but DH loves it. He has a small Braun grinder and then has a small Krups espresso/coffee maker. He is so not a morning person so he grinds the beans every night for the next morning and puts them in sealed pyrex container. He has a regular coffee maker that he never uses anymore because he said the espresso maker makes stronger coffee.
