"But we would have to use our time every year

Ahhhh, but the magic of DVC is you DON'T!! I agree with you, it's nice to have the "excuse" to go every year, but if there's a situation where you just can't get away that often then DVC is flexible enough to allow it. You can always bank and/or borrow to have even MORE points to spend when you do go! There's also the rental market for points, where you could likely make enough to cover your annual dues in the event you couldn't go one year.

For instance if you have 150 points, you could bank the first year, travel the second on 300 points. OR you could even borrow the third and go with 450 points in the second year! That would give you a vacation every third year with 450 points to use!! There are an awful lot of overseas DVC owners who do just that.

Gosh--there's always something I leave out in my rebuttal to my husband--maybe it's my negotiation skills! I wish I would have remembered to tell him that we could bank the points for a better vacation or rent them. I'll be bringing that up tonight. I probably left that in the back of my mind because I DO like to go every year.

Maybe a little compromise would help win him over? I can almost guarantee you that you'd end up going more often than every other year anyway, but if that's what sells the idea, why not offer it up?! Most folks here say they used to go less often, but once they got into DVC they found themselves going more and more. We were already at 2+ trips a year and we find we're CONSTANTLY looking for ways to fit even more trips in!

Hi siouxi31. I've been reading your post and the many responses.

In Feb 2000, my DW and I decided that we would be doing an annual trip to Disney. In June 2000 I began researching DVC. I requested a video an material. We watched and read. DW had a hard time with the initial investment. The topic was coming up almost every night and sometimes DW was not very plesant.

I wanted OKW (many personal reasons - all resorts are excellent). After many, many, many talks with my Guide, and friends, I (alone) decided to buy without DW knowledge. Well, when she found out (when the big package came in the mail), my life was a living hell. She did not talk to me for weeks. As time went by things got better. We already had a ressie for Feb 2001 so when I was able I changed the ressie to OKW 1b for a week.

The ride down was good but the Vacation was the best when she drove into the resort area and she walked into the room. She was WoWed. She actually called her Mom that night to say what "WE" had purchased and that "I had done good".

Long story, but we just complete our 1st addon April.

I'm not saying take this road - but if you can stay in a 1b at any of the DVC resorts, it just might spread some Pixie Dust on your DH.

Good Luck :) Oh by the way, looks like we are going 2-3 times a year now.:bounce:

Hi Yesdisneyfool, Thanks for the story and I'm glad it worked out for you! I'm going to convince him!
By the way, if anyone sees messages on this board from an angry husband named BigLou about convicing his wife to buy into DVC----tell him to live a little!

......Tis better to beg forgiveness than seek permission......spend the $$$ and join the club!

Mickmse2002---I had forgotten about that saying--it's my favorite one to use at work but didn't think of using it at home!
Richnj--I think you're onto something. I only wish I hadn't relinquished the "keeping track of finances and paying bills" job to my husband about 4 years ago--nothing gets past his nose. I'll have to be creative.
To everyone who has posted, I'd like to take this time to thank all of you. When I started this post I was truly upset. Now this whole situation has turned into a game for me and I'm greatly amused as well as educated by all of these stories. I think I would have felt rejected if nobody responded to my post but now I'm on the top of the world with all of you caring enough to help with your responses! I have to go now. I'm the middle of some intricate work--subliminally splicing my DVC video into one of my husband's guitar videos. He's loves watching guitar playing and when it's over he'll want to be welcomed home as much as I do.

My DH is not a Disney fan either. He would rather be out in the middle of the frozen tundra than at Disney. DD really enjoys Florida and Disney like I do. We (DD and I) have been going since she was 3, sometimes 3 times per year. We only stayed at a value resort once, but that same trip stayed AKL concierge for part, so we had been spending quite a bit on vacations. Finally this year in March DH went with us (after DD pleading endlessly with him and older relatives making him feel guilty). I rented points to stay at OKW, 1 bedroom. He loved the tranquil atmosphere of OKW and enjoyed the 1 bedroom with full kitchen and washer/dryer. I know, it sounds funny, but he actually cooks. He even really liked the king-sized bed, which he usually can't sleep on vacations. He also felt safer with us staying at OKW compared to some of the off-site areas that I drove him by. Since we were still having really nasty cold weather in March he enjoyed sitting and reading on the deck overlooking the golf course. After that trip, although he still will not be going with us, he decided that it was okay for us to become members. He didn't like the amount of up front money, but as I spoke about home equity loan options, he said, heck why don't you just take some of the money we have set aside and do that now. We bought 200 pts. at BCV sight unseen when we could still get the $5 off option. DD and I are going in July and DH is happy to not be going with us. That is fine though because he really isn't much fun to have around at the parks with crowds of people or in hot weather.

And yes, I am a planner by nature, so I really enjoy planning the whole vacation experience, points, etc.
