Can anyone find Green Giant Mushrooms (sliced or whole, in a jar) at their local grocery store? These have been missing from our local grocery for a very long time. The store has left an open shelf space labeled for these mushrooms for months so I think that they haven't been discontinued or something else would be put in their place. There are plenty of fresh mushrooms in the produce area so I can't figure out what the problem would be in getting the jarred mushrooms.

Thanks for the link. That can be a really useful site. The mushrooms are still a mystery. I entered the information for the mushrooms and the site shows that they have not been discontinued but shows that nothing is available within 50 miles (you can't search further than 50 miles). I used a link from that site to send a comment, maybe they will answer.

Ask the store, it could be a warehouse shipping issue or maybe its an issue with the on-hand count in the stores ordering unit.

I wonder if the prolonged and deeper into the South cold this year might have had something to do with it. I have not been able to get escarole or big eggplants for over a month now and the produce guy told me the weather is the problem.

I don't buy canned mushrooms - much prefer fresh!

So - I'm going to suggest just using fresh mushrooms. We literally just add fresh mushrooms in any recipe that calls for canned. Don't do anything special (i.e, cook them first). If anything - I add way more, simply because I love mushrooms.

To the OP - if you are interested in availability outside your 50 mile radius - put in a different zip code or city. ;)

We can't find any in the stores around Indianapolis either.....

My wife sent an email, and got a canned response back.

This. Buy the sliced crimini/baby portabellos, DO NOT wash them, mushrooms absorb water. Put them in a skillet with a little EVOO and butter, let them cook down then salt and pepper them. You can chill them from there or just use them. Same as the canned but with great flavor.

I haven't bought canned shrooms in 30 years. We used them for Chef Boyardee boxed pizza mix. A great childhood memory.

Since this is a thread about canned mushrooms - am I the only one finding this particular post very funny?:lmao:

Duh, I must have really been slow last night. I should have thought about just putting in a different city. I'll try that just out of curiosity.

I love mushrooms too. I like to eat them fresh but also kept the sliced, jarred on hand for recipes. They are quicker to use and a good to have on hand for when I haven't recently been to the grocery. I know the rules about not washing fresh mushrooms but I just can't bring myself to use them without rinsing. They almost always have dirt on them so I have to rinse them.

Nope, I found it :rotfl2: too!

We get canned mushrooms at Costco but haven't looked for them in a month or so, but fresh have been plentiful. I love fresh but DH doesn't like the texture and taste of them the unless they have been cooked so much they are pretty much just like canned :sad2: so we use a lot of canned. I use the fresh when I am making something for myself.

FYI: Alton Brown showed that washing them in water doesn't really make much of a difference-- and certainly doesn't make them "waterlogged". I always give mine a rinse and dry with a towel. Never had any problems and they are never "soggy".

I buy fresh however when I was at the store I had to look because of this thread.

They had plenty of store brand mushrooms as well as Giorgio. No problem with getting canned or jarred mushrooms.

I did not see any Green Giant mushrooms but then again not sure if they even carry them any longer.

None in glass jars within 20 miles of me and I live just outside NYC...

cans are available though....
