OK, we did 3 days, getting home today. Overall it was pretty good. So here is the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly:

Good: The waterpark was amazing. I would say primarily geared for the under 12 crowd but eveyrbody seemed to enjoy it, even the teens. The whole palce was highly decorated and I loved that they said "Christmas" everywhere, not just holidays. We had the most basic rooms and the were fine, nothing special, but clean and interesting. Everybody has a balcony.

The Bad ( really just average ). The restaurant was just "fair". It is a buffet. They have the exact same meals everyday. A little overpriced, but "ok". The shows were fien I guess, for the under 8 crowd, but older than that will be dissapointed, I would think. The cub club was OK too, but you pay for almost every activity, and usually too much for it.

The VERY UGLY: Check in. Check in is listed at 4 PM (" or as soon as rooms become available" ) Now what that meant to me, and apparently hundreds of othe rpeople was 4PM, or earlier if they are ready. Nope. What it really means is any time they give you a room AFTER 4 PM. People who got there at 1 PM ( knowing that they can use the water park ) spent an hour in line only to be told to check back at 4PM or later to see if rooms arer ready. Literally hundreds of people in line. So, why not tell them as a whole, that rooms woild not be ready til after 4?

We got there at 3:55 PM. I waited in line 53 minutes, to be told there was no room available yet. Then I saw the "other line".... the people who had been told to check back at 4PM. That line was OVER 100 people long, and guess what? They were told that no rooms were ready yet! Those poor people waited 2+ hours in line and still no rooms. We went to dinner off premises and came back at 7PM. We still waited 10 - 15 minutes in line to be told "Your room just became available"!

7PM and my room is just now AVAIALABLE? OK, I didn't make a fuss, but trust me, corportate will be hearing from me tomorrow.

Side notes: There may or may not be internet access. I called the place and was told there was no in room internet access. BTW, why would there not be, in this day and age in a brand new resort? Seems ludicrous to me. Byt then, today, before checking out I saw a guest services book that saud check with the desk to get a wireless access kit. So, who knows?

Towels are provided for the pool area. So are floatation devices for the kids. At the pool area I just happened to notice that a Hot Dog was SIX BUCKS! Now maybe it was a combo; I don't know. But $6 for a hot dog? Yikes.

Overall, this was a nice place to stay. Shopping is very close by. LOTS of shopping. We also ate a a nice place 1.5 miles from the resort called Smuggler's Cove ( make a right out of the resort, go 1.5 miles, and it is on the right ).

I give it 3 out of 5 stars. I might have given it 4 but the check in was SO BAD that I had to knock a star off just for that. And, I would say that 2 nights is plenty here. I heard other people saying the same thing. Really, there is not a lot to do onsite, in the winter. Maybe summer is better. On the plus side, Camelback Ski area is in plain view from the hotel.

Thank you for the review. I have been waiting for some since we are definatly not going to Disney this year. I have heard similiar horror stories about their check in. :wave2:

Thanks for the review. I had looked into staying at the one is Kansas City as I hate staying with MIL, but it was almost $300 a night for the cheap room. Uh, no thank you. We'll just stop at my parents lake house on the way home and go the indoor water park there for $60.

Wow glad for the review - I have been trying all week to find a friday -sunday
opening there for a tubing/ski weekend for me DH and DS 7 . no luck booked for every type of room for everyweekend now thru may....wth!!!
But if it is just a water park making it great maybe we will skip it all toghether and save the money.

That is the rate here, too. But we paid a grand opening rate of $199. And, I have heard that once you stay there, you get emailed specials at far less than the $300 rate. BTW, $199 is the MOST I would spend on a room like this. I really felt like $150 would have been closer to fair price. By the time you add in meals, and miscellaneous spending, a family of 4 could easily spend $1000 for 3 nights.

Yes, onsite, I would say that the water park is THE ONLY reason to go. Other places have better activities, and are less expensive.

Wow, that's insane about the checkin!

We've been to the one in Williamsburg several times. They do have in-room internet access.

If it fits your schedule, go during the week. There's usually some good rates Sun-Thurs at all the Great Wolf's. It's the weekends when they jack up the prices. :)

We were there a week after they opened and I brushed off the long check in lines to a kink they had to work out. I can't believe check in is still so bad. We arrived at approx 6:00 p.m. and waited in line for over an hour to check in. Checking out was just as bad. We did not get a receipt under our door the day of check out so I asked at the desk what I should do to get a receipt and I was told to stand in line!!!!! The line was longer than when I checked in and I was not about to stand in line again so I left.

I agree, the water park is pretty awesome but I would suggest water shoes at all times. Some spots were very slippery. I saw kids sliding all over the place. DS did slip and hurt his wrist, it swelled up pretty good. I ended up in the room with him, watching TV while he tried to keep the swelling down with an ice pack. My husband stayed in the park with my older DS. :earboy2:

As mentioned by the OP, the food is nothing special.

The outlets are close by and were the highlight of the trip for me.

When you first walk in and there are towels in the bins, grab some. The towels are small so people take 3-4 per person. They go quickly.

We had a great time. It is a nice get away and yes, I would go again. One night would be plenty for us.

Thanks for the review. They are finally going to build one in Canada and I never paid attention to any other threads about the Great Wolf Lodge because they were too far.

Did your kids enjoy it?

They loved it. My one daughter said that it was her favorite vacation ever... of course she says that after every vacation! :)

No excuse for the check in process. Having been in the travel industry for many year, I can honestly say I have never heard of such a bad system. I'd complain and I'd complain a lot. For those prices, rooms should be ready at 4pm or dinner should be complimentary.

Wow, check-in does not sound like fun. I certainly hope they improve it before we go in April.

I have a question? What is the population like in the Pocono's. Our Great Wolf Lodge in Wisconsin Dells is in a town of 1200. The surrounding country side probably addes 500 more people. The reason I am asking is because there is no one to work the winter months in the Wisconsin Dells area. I've been to a resturants in the Fall over there and they are so understaffed. My sister just came home a little while ago and she said "she really noticed understaffing too". So maybe that is the problem.

Which location was this? I was hoping to get to stay at the Ohio location this summer.

Maybe not. :(

The one in Ohio is very nice, and there is also a brand new indoor water park nearby called Kalahari. They're both priced the same. You can usually get a room for around $220-$250, which includes a night's stay and two days of waterpark passes. I don't think that's so bad.

That's what I was hoping to hear, thanks.

I'm hoping to do a trip centered around that area that would include Great Wolf, Six Flags, and Cedar Point.

and I finally noticed the title said Poconos. Didn't know it was a chain.

Probably similar. But we saw LOTS of staff everywhere. I saw 3 house claening carts alone on just our 4th floor wing of the resort. Restaurant was staffed. I even saw 3 staff members at the Cub Club.... and 4 kids!

That did not "seem" to be the problem. However, I did see one man who seemed to work from 10 AM to Midnite. He was always there, it seemed. He was like a walking concierge.

Thanks for the review. We are going Feb 10th weekend. We are going up Saturday morning so we'll have 2 whole days, as opposed to having to leave on Sunday. Did you check out the spa at all?
