Great Steaks in Orlando?

Hi

Have chatted to husband about what sort of place he wants to eat at when we visit Orlando in October. He wants a great steak.

We went to Don Shulas (in the Dolphin) a few years ago and that was great. Although the atmosphere was a little stuffy (prefered the Don Shulas in Naples... seemed more relaxed). We have also been to a Morton's Steakhouse (although in LAs Vegas, not in Orlando): hope we caught it on a bad night, because we were not that impressed... :(

So I am wondering it Don Shulas is still the place to go or if there are any better alternatives? Ruths Chris (in Winterpark) looks very nice. Anyone experience that one? Is that quite a hike (by car) from Reunion? Any other suggestions?

Boo

we love them at the outback!! very big and very tasty

Onsite we like Shulas, Yachtsman Steak House, Le Cellier and Flying Fish.

Offsite the Outback and Red Lobster.

Outback is our favourite, and you can take-out too which when you stay closeby in a villa is a big plus.

Ahhh, steakhouses, my second favourite place after Hooters!!

We went to Shula's for the first time in January, and whilst it was very good, IMHO it's not the best around.

Ruths Chris is very nice at Sand Lake, but as you say from Reunion it is a bit of a trek. We've been to the Palm a number of times at Hard Rock Hotel, which again is very nice, but even further than Ruths Chris.

My current favourite though is Old Hickory at Gaylord Palms (website ) steaks are fantastic and whilst the setting inside Gaylord Palms is manufactured, I think it is superb. Also, AFAIK it is the closest decent steak house to Reunion, probably a 10 min journey at the most.

We had a fantastic steak at Dennys near the Crossroads, it really was cooked to perfection, they asked us before cooking them how we like 'em and I can honestly say we were amazed how good they were. We will certainly be going back for more ::yes:: ::yes:: :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Will definitely go to Outback anyway, but prefer it for Bloomin' Onion and ribs... not really for it's steaks. Have had steaks at Outback and they were ok, but husband is looking for a more "Specialist" steakhouse for his steak.

We love Red Lobster too - for seafood - and will visit it at some point during the trip (we are only spending 4 days in Orlando, then 7 days on a cruise, then 6 days in LA visiting the in-laws).

Why do I think that husband would like Hooters too??? ;)

Thanks for the suggestions - will look into all of them. Keep any more suggestions/opinions coming :)

Thanks,
Boo

We liked Logans Roadhouse on the 192. The steaks were good and we enjoyed the atmosphere, its not a posh place and there are peanut shells everywhere.

I had an amezing steak at the raglan road pub in downtown disney- all the food there seems very nice thought is def not the cheapest option. I think a steak was $23

BH is my husband, so I'm not going to say anything much different, but I'll add my thoughts anyway.

I did enjoy Shula's, but I came away thinking that a steak can only be so good and, of all the high-end steakhouses we've tried, it maybe wasn't the best experience of the lot. Mega expensive and, I agree with you, a tad stuffy.

I know lots of people here love the Outback Steakhouse, but I don't. I'd put it on a par with our Beefeaters :duck: .

The Palm at HRH is part of the chain which originated in New York. It's very nice and, if you haven't ever been to HRH, a good excuse to have a look. The house speciality is Surf 'n' Turf for two - steak of your choice, plus Novia Scotia lobster. We've done that a couple of times, but to be honest, I find lobster over-rated and it really bumps up the price. They also do a huge porterhouse which is good for sharing.

Ruth's Chris was a big find for us. We've only eaten at the Sand Lake one (near Universal), but it was a pleasant surprise - it's housed in a totally unassuming strip mall, but it's beautiful inside. It's upmarket without being in the slightest bit intimidating. There are a number of other good restaurants in that area. I certainly wouldn't bother making the trek to Winter Park unless you want to visit anyway.

Like Matt, I also love the Old Hickory Steakhouse at Gaylord Palms. If you've never been there, GP is a sight to behold. It has three themed areas all housed under a huge glass atrium - Old Key West, St Augustine and the Everglades. Old Hickory Steakhouse is housed within a 'shack' in the Everglades section. It's one of the few places in Orlando which has Foie Gras as a permanent fixture on the menu. Again, it's a 'posh' place with a relaxed atmosphere. Of the three, it's by far the nearest to Reunion. You've got two choices, but the quickest is probably via the I-4. Leave Reunion at the main entrance and turn right. Join the I-4 travelling east (about a mile) and leave it at the junction with the Osceola Parkway (exit 65). You need to travel east on the OP for just a short distance (you will be able to see Gaylord Palms from the I-4). You will be given a parking ticket - get it stamped in the restaurant and you won't have to pay.

We like the Outback because staying close by at a villa we can take out, I normally go and collect and have a drink at the bar whilst I wait.

Would love to be more adventurous and go to many of the other places but Joshua just doesn't have the patience for a formal restaurant.

Ponderosa style is the best we can manage really.
I am sure one's like Old Hickory are much better.

Trying to push him a little more but he does not really understand eating out, maybe after his first Character Breakfast in August we can try other things.

To be honest, Johnny, none of these places are really overally suitable for children, let alone for Josh. We've only started going to them since ours have grown up, and even then we'd rather leave them at home!

Fair point mate.

My family have always loved the Ponderosa, we have gone there at least once evry vistit to florida since i was 5 so it's great for any age. The staff are realy friendly and the steaks are realy tasty. They also have a all you care to eat buffet which is great for kids as they can try a bit of anything they fancy without the fuss of looking through the menu trying to find something that they might eat.
Hope you find the advice your looking for.

im gonna be a snob here...

If u want a real good steak (& its my specialist subject!) forget outback & the like. ponderosas steaks are rubbish.

for a moderate price the black diamond at Black angus (opp wetn wild) is decent for $17.95 inc all the trimmings, & they have loads of 15% off coupons knocking about.

mortons is overrated & v pricey. the best steak in vegas is at circus circus steak house (Im choking saying that after what adumop the hotel is but itts tru -& their steaks are half tyhe price of some others. TIs comes a close second.

back to orlando & if u want a real steak..

CHARLEYS!!!!!!!!!

on I drive. Expensive but the best (thats why it is continually in the top 5 in US steakhouses)

If u like eating out on the posh side & doing something a bit different, try choup chop at Royal pacific hotel at universal, emeril lagasses new place. we had a superb meal there. it does have steak on the menu but try the fish - marvellous.. I was only there 4 days ago & i want to go now..!

I am sure you are right mate - trouble is for us with Josh being Autistic he doesn't have the patience for something 'posh'.
Hence Outback (take out) and the likes of Ponderosa are the best we can hope for.

I would love to go for something a bit more special but it just wouldn't work.

David's Club at the nearby Champions Gate is a really nice place and they do steaks, definitely worth a visit.

I've been to Shula's, Ruth's Chris, The Palm and various others, and think the Old Hickory Steakhouse at Gaylord Palms is really good.

:thumbsup2 If i were you i'd give Key W Kool's open pit and grill a try on the 192, just opposite (the now closed)Splendid China, they are a little expensive but i think their steaks are mouth watering! The 32oz Porterhouse is my DH's fave but i prefer their T- Bone, absolutly scrummy! On the cheaper side, we got a good steak at the Olive Garden last year,(their pasta is FAB as well) it's on I-Drive beside Race Rock.

Hope this helps :)
Audrey.
