Great run, bad result

The temperature broke and we had a morning with low humidity and cool weather (for summer in the south) so I had a great run. I was faster than normal by 1 1/2 minutes per mile and it didn't feel like I was pushing it that hard. I love that kind of run. The bad news is, when I was running on a sidewalk by a busy road, a dog started barking at me from across the road and actually ran at me. It turns out that he was very friendly and had a collar on and just wanted to say hi. I petted him and continued on with my run. As he went back home, he got hit by a truck and died. That just wrecked my day. Has anything like this happened to anyone else?

OMG Ed, that is a horrible story and sorry about that.:sad1:

Not quite like yours, but I was out walking one morning in my neighborhood and right on the side of the sidewalk was a squirrel next to a palm tree getting one of the seeds from the ground, I "spoke" to it and tried not to spook it. Then as I go by a car comes down the rode and the squirrel didn't know which way to go and the car was going WAY to fast on a 30mph local street and well got to witness the whole thing. Bad enough and then of course I had to come back the same way. UGH!!

Again, sorry about the dog. I guess the owners really should have had the dog in their house or yard.

Oh my! I am so sorry. That would have ruined my day for sure. As a side note, I hate when unchained/unfenced dogs run at me during a run! It totally freaks me out. It's too bad the owners were not more responsible!

I had a weird dog adventure one morning myself. I was on a morning walk and out of the corner of my eye I see this huge black dog running across the road right at me. I turn so I can take the attack face on and not to the side and just as I turn a blazer hits the dog in the rear end. I thought that was the end of it but the hit launched the dog in the air and it landed on me. I threw the dog off me and it staggerd around and then staggered back across the street to where it came from.

I don't know if the dog was like yours and being friendly or if it was attacking. Either way the smack in the butt by the blazer and the trip through the air made it lose all interest in me. That sure got my heart beat up there good though.

Oh how sad!

This is what happened to me just yesterday...

I was at the tail end of my run (I live in Maine...lots of wooded areas, rural areas, you get the idea) and about 50 yards ahead of me, a large white-tailed doe hops across the road (again, lots of trees on both sides of the road). Now, we have deer ALL the time in my area. Hardly a day goes by without seeing some. But still, this was really close. So much so that it really startled me and I let out a gasp.

Then my mind went to, "Gee, one has never come that close before, I wonder if something spooked it?"

Sure enough, just 5 seconds later, a big ol' moose came sauntering out of the trees and crossed the road. I FROZE. For those who don't know, Moose are HUGE when seen up close. And if spooked, can be very fast and quite unpleasant to say the least. So I froze in my tracks for a full minute after he was out of sight. Then slowly turned and headed back the other direction. :rotfl2:

There is nothing worse than people letting their dogs run after you. It annoys me because it ruins my rhythm. I don't pet or even acknowledge it. Luckily none of them have been aggressive and jumped on me or anything. I wouldn't want one to get hit by a car but I also wouldn't feel guilty about it. The dog chose to chase after you, you didn't call it so your conscience should be clean.

Now, if you want to talk about a really scarry incident I had one I was running and looked up to see a skunk about 10 feet in front of me. I have never in my life changed direction so quickly and make sure to look for anything in the street moving around now just to make sure it isn't another one.
