Great pedestrian cities w/ stipulations

Chicago.

We don't get much snow.

Well, compared to Buffalo or the Twin Cities.

It's all relative...

You might be joking, but I have to somewhat agree... Chicago really doesn't get THAT much snow... It is colder than heck (IMO anyway) but it only snows, in the city, a couple of times each winter and it is cleaned up within a few hours. I keep wanting a good ol' fashion, close down the city blizzard, but the in the 5 years I've lived in Chicago, so far it hasn't happened.

It's the infrastructure and the fact that the snow plows get out IMMEDIATELY after a snow. We used to run after the snow fell so we could enjoy it before it became yellow with brown balls on it... the lovely DAWGS of NYC...

And that's why, no matter how much snow NYC gets compared to DC, NYC is still better. You would think that they would be able to clear out snow form the nations capitol but apparently no one there has gotten that memo. DC area is horrendous when it comes to snow and ice clean up. They just dont deal well with winter weather even though we get snow and ice every year

in 2008, we had like an inch of snow on the ground one day. 1 INCH. But of course they did not salt so it melted and refroze overnight. It usually took me about 45 minutes-1 hour to get to school but after 2 hours in the car, I was only halfway there. I turned around ans went home. You do not wnat to be in DC with REAL snow if you have to go somewhere.

It has more to do with how well prepared a city is and what plans they have in place BEFORE a storm. Also what their budget is.

NYC has humongous budgets for snow. The snow plow drivers get massive overtime to put the plows on the garbage trucks, then to drive them. They also can't be plowing and picking up garbage at the same time, so they have to go around again after they've plowed to do garbage runs.

I don't think CA even has salt spreaders??? So they wouldn't even have bought salt.

And what is this need in CA for ALL cars to put CHAINS on tires for 2" of snow in snowy areas? :confused3 :sad2: If people's driver's license can prove they are actually from a snow belt state, we should be allowed to drive in your snow without chains. ALL cars shouldn't be required to have them. We northerners laugh at 2" of snow & ice.

I lived in CA for a few years. I've seen cars with flipped over or crunched up cars (like during a blizzard,) for driving in the rain. :sad2: There's no excuse for that. Driver's Ed should pull out a garden hose and wet the roads down to teach CA drivers how to drive on wet, slick roads.

Yeah, definitley. It really is about preparation and teh DC area just completely lacks that. I live in SoCal right now. We live directly south of the grapevine. That road is closed more in the winter than it is open..lol. Except, in california, we have to be more worried about the rain. Does everyone just forget how to drive when it rains around here??

Nope. Not the blizzard of a lifetime. Blizzard of '96. Summers are basically always miserable in that area. I remember having like 2 weeks straight of code red days in 2008. 95 degrees with 95% humidity is not uncommen for a good portion of the summer.

And winters are alawys ridiculously cold. I remember having more than a week in winter of '08-'09 where I would leave for school at 7:30AM and it would be below 10 degrees outside.

I love DC. I love the surrounding areas. I lived there for 20 years. But the weather is definitley not ideal.

Maybe you're just particularly sensitive to weather? DC is no Hawaii, but it's really not that extreme weather wise. It really just depends on how important perfect weather is to you. I like the area because there are four seasons and you are close to everything (mountains, beach, country, city). So for me the occasional snow storm and a humid summer are worth it.

I believe this winter broke the '96 records, and actually all records. Snowiest winter on record. Still, that was 14 years between major blizzards. I believe we also had a pretty big snow storm in 2003. Not too bad. We do shut down in the snow, we can't handle what a city up north or out west could. But we don't have the infrastructure because it just doesn't happen enough.

According to wikipedia (so take that as you will lol), average winter temp is 38 F. The city averages 37 days hotter than 90 °F (32.2 °C) and 64 nights at or below freezing. I will say with the humidity it sure feels like more than 37 above 90 degrees.

Not trying to argue with you, I just thought it was funny we had such different opinions on the weather so I looked it up. Honestly, weather is all about perception isn't it?

Shortly after my Dad moved to Missouri there was a 4" snowfall and they closed most of the roads. He left for work not thinking anything of it and got stopped by a highway patrolman as he tried to enter the freeway. My Dad asked what was up and the patrolman said "the roads are closed because of all the snow". My Dad laughed and told him he grew up in Northern MN, the Patrolman let him pass :lmao:.
