100% true and confirmed, sadly. It will officially close August 13, 2017 to start the construction of the new ride that will be in it's place: Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway.
We are going in October and was very sad to hear it won't be around until then. Though the new Mickey Mouse attraction that is replacing it seems to be very promising. It will be pretty quiet at DHS for a bit. But in a few years it will be crazy there.
I have a trip planned for the first week of August so I'm glad I get to ride it one last time. Sad to see it go, but really excited to see the runaway railway.
- Heading down to say good bye next week.
- Needed some serious TLC and updating.
- But still sad to see it go.
- Not excited for MM ride based on what was presented.
- I hope that many pieces of these sets can turn up throughout park.
- A restaurant would be cool.
- I ate at Burt Reynolds one in Atlanta that was nothing more than movie sets,
and you had tables in each set. Very cool.
It's not widely known that the GMR sets were also private event venues. Streets of America, the Prop Shop, the Back Lot Tour area and now the GMR will be removed from the list.

Woah! I never knew that. The pics of dining tables set up in the Wizard of Oz area are amazing. That would be some nice event! I'm sure it ain't cheap either.

YUP, have followed all those events for awhile. It's one way to follow fates .... if you find the booking list and see how far out events stop being booked you can predict end dates.
TiW also does some special events in venues, GMR was one of them.

You're not alone and it is neat.
The Events Group and it's sub groups, is sort of a stealth department. It's much larger than people imagine. There are numerous special and private events taking place every night. Epcot alone averages a half dozen events of various sizes every night at FW and WS, sometimes more. The largest being the partial or entire park buyout.
We did the TiW GMR dinner about 3 years ago. It was a memorable evening. The storyline was our host, Monte Metro was a director drumming up support for his new film "Happy Endings." Drinks and apps were in the gangster scene, dinner was in the western themed room and dessert was in the Wizard of Oz room. Finally we watched the film montage at the end of the attraction which was Monte Metro's "Happy Endings" film. It was fun to leisurely walk through the attraction and see all the minute details throughout.
