Is there such a thing as a great dane proof dog bed?
I have used blankets--he tears them up
I have purchased huge pet beds-- he tore it up
Kong chew resistant dog bed--lasted 30 mins
On the suggestion of our vet we tried a thick rubber mat-- that lasted about 45 mins.
He only needs it because he destoyed the floor of his kennel (the pan). I hate for him to have to lie down on the wire bottom of the kennel. Before anyone asks he is kenneled 3 days a week for 6 hours. hes out and about the rest of the time!! he turned 1 on the first so only 2 more years of the puppy stage!!

This might seem strange, but there's a particular vinyl that was designed for tenting houses. Even if there is a rip in it, it won't further tear. The seams are double stitched and heat sealed. I wish I could remember the name of it, but my aunt's old employer sells this stuff as a wholesaler to fumigator companies. Of course this was a while ago, but I'm sure the material still exists. It can be filled with a foam insert with the vinyl covering it a 100%.

you said you tried a thick rubber mat. have you looking into stall matting? its really thick and even my 1500 lbs horse cant tear it! Its about $35 for a 4 x 6 piece.. you will need a truck because it is heavy! They have them at grain stores and sometime tack shops. You might even be able to call around and see if anyone has a scrap piece that is be enough for the kennel.

I know breeders who have had success with Kurunda beds. I feel your pain. My girl is a terrible bed shredder. It seems the more expensive the bed, the faster it is torn apart. We keep blankets in her crate, nothing with stuffing. She will be 1 year old tomorrow.
Good Luck

I ended up ordering a dog bed from an online store called "the cushion guy" and it's held up shockingly well, we've had it for 5 years now. We were at the point where DH said if that if this didn't work the dog would have no bed. We bought the one that's made for a crate, it ties into the crate so the dog can't pull it up to chew on the corners.

Thanks everyone! DH and I will look into all of these. I am a little hesitant to spend $100+ on a dog bed when I have seen what he does to them. :)

I know what you're talking about. We have an 11-month old lab mix who will chew anything! I actually have bald spots on my friese carpet, where she has chewed that. This actually was very dangerous, as she swallowed chunks of it -- thankfully she threw up the pieces of it. But, we really do watch her now, and for her own safety, we crate her when we are going to be away for any period of time. BTW, I have found when she does show an interest in chewing the carpet, I now spray it with vinegar and water, and she'll leave it alone.

She's a rescue dog, and when we got her as a young pup, her foster mom suggested using old terry cloth towels as padding in her crate; said most pups chew the fancy dog beds anyhow, and the towels are easy to keep clean. That worked very well for a while, but a few months ago, she started chewing the towels!!! So now she has to sleep on the bare plastic tray. Which I feel guilty about, but frankly, she doesn't seem to mind, and since we crated her from Day 1, she has no problem going to her crate.

Sorry I can't help you much, except to say, maybe a bunch of old towels will work for you. Or maybe an old piece of carpet or rug...

Oh, one other thing I tried about a month ago (which didn't work for us), I had an old ratty blanket I was going to throw out, so I stuffed that in a cheap king size pillow case -- wasn't big enough for the crate, but just wanted to try something -- and she chewed the pillowcase. Maybe something like that will work for you.

I'm interested to see if anyone else has suggestions. Oh, and as far as "chew toys". Rawhides obviously didn't work. I've recently gotten these marrow bones (they have to be the thick ones - if they're too thin, she'd break the pieces off). You can buy them filled, and once she gets the filling out, I've stuffed them with her kibbles mixed w/canned dogfood and freeze them to make it more challenging. I do the same thing with those pyramid shaped kong toys. I've heard people say it keeps their dogs busy for hours - mine empties them in 20 minutes, but it's something.

Don't mean to go on and on about this, but I'm on my third session of obedience training, simply because I'm getting old, and I need to have a dog that's well-trained especially since she's going to be a big one. It's really important that we give the larger dogs a lot of exercise -- a coupla long brisk walks every day (I can't run) and backyard play. I've noticed on the days that we slack off, she gets bored and starts chewing whatever is available.

He sounds a little bored. My Newf is a chewer-sofa, tables, shoes, markers-if it fits in her mouth, it's gone. Oddly enough the only thing she doesn't chew is her bed. :confused3

Get him the xxl Kong, stuff it with peanut butter, and freeze it. When you kennel him throw it in with him.

Also, have you tried some Bitter Apple spray? Put it on a little part of what he chews ( so he'll think the whole thing is nasty ) and pray it works. :rotfl: Don't you just love the lenghty puppy phase of the Giant Breeds???

The only thing Titan does chew on is his bed!! Even when hes not crated he will go in there to chew on it. He will carry a toy around and it not have a chew mark on it :confused3 Oh well, I do love my big baby and my other 2 danes dont chew on thier beds so the $30 beds from academy last for a year or so. I guess I will spend the extra $ now and pray it lasts :rotfl2:

Oh funny bitter apple story....we got a big bottle of it and DH sprayed down something with it (dont remember exactly what) but DH left it out. Our dog at the time chewed the bottle up and was licking the inside of it. DH now refuses to buy it!!

We ordered the biggest one , 4 inches thick. He better love it!! They had a picture of a cougar on there chewing on one and it didnt rip, so I hope it will hold up to Titan.
