Grapefruit cake

A few years ago while on a solo trip, I wanted to try a piece of grapefruit cake. I asked about it in Starring Rolls, and the CM was so sweet and went to get me a piece from Brown Derby next door. Starring Rolls didn't carry the cake themselves -- not sure if that's changed or not.

Question - Has anyone recently been able to get a piece of grapefruit cake from Starring Rolls? Or has anyone been able to get in Brown Derby during "off hours" (mid afternoon maybe?) just for dessert? Those that are coming down to WDW with me on my next trip have asked to try the grapefruit cake, but we don't really want to eat a meal at Brown Derby.

TIA! :)

I would like to know this too. Love the grapefruit cake!!!

Yes, we had grapefruit cake during the July 4th week at the SRC.
Also, you can walk up and ask for some at the BD.

What does Grapefruit Cake taste like? Is it at all sweet? Everyone raves about it but it doesn't sound very good (i am not a huge fan of grapefruit though).

this is excellent news for me!

DH doesn't like to eat at BD, so now that Starring Rolls has the grapefruit cake, i can at least have half my favorites!

(if only they'd also offer the cobb salad "to go"....)

Vince, did they actually have the cake on hand at Starring Rolls? Or did they have to go get it from Brown Derby as a special favor (which is what they did for me last time)? I'm hoping it's now part of the regular "menu" at SRC. Thanks for the reply!

I didn't get the impression it was a "special favor", the cake is not displayed because it is chilled. They went into the kitchen and got the cake for me on more than one occasion. All you need to do is ask a CM in Starring Rolls. Just be prepared for the price of this slice of deliciousness--the last time I purchased a single slice it was $10+. :scared1: That's expensive cake, but oh so yummy!

It is sweet and not what I would call a strong grapefruit flavor. It is light, sweet, and tough to fend off others trying to get a taste of your dessert. I like a grapefruit every now and again, but I wouldn't go out of my way for one--this cake, however, is worth a trip to DHS to get!

Wow! I don't remember it being that much! Maybe we'll have to do one slice with 4 forks. :rolleyes1

According to the Brown Derby menu on allearsnet, it's $6. Charging $4 more to get it from Starring Rolls seems pretty excessive.

When I paid for it the first year, the CM asked if I wanted 1/4, 1/2, or whole cake. I told her I really just wanted a slice of cake and she said that would be a 1/4. I thought I would be receiving a large chunk of cake. Imagine my surprise when I received what I consider a normal size serving of cake for my $10. If I hadn't paid the same price the very next year, I might have thought it was a fluke. Perhaps the additional cost is due to purchasing it through SR? :confused3

Honestly, we have only been to BD to dine on one occasion. I was too full to get the cake at lunch and I didn't even check the price of dessert. We stopped at SR later in the week because I wanted to try the cake. I have no explanation why I was charged (in two different years) so much more.

Tess that had to be a mistake because I paid 12 for a whole cake !

I got a slice of it from the cafe last tuesday, the CM went next door to Brown Derby to get it. It was 6 and change and very delicious.:thumbsup2

Wow, that's amazing. For only $12, I think I'd get a whole cake with 4 forks. :thumbsup2

Hmmmm, I'm beginning to think this is some of that new Disney math. . .if I paid $10 per slice a couple of years ago (on 2 separate occasions mind you), and JnX1 got a single slice a week ago for $6+, and vince3 got a whole cake for $12. . .more than one of us was ripped off! Now, it's merely a guess, but do you suppose each CM charges what they want for this little delicacy--if so, I'm going to do some CM shopping for the best deal! :rotfl:

All of the differing prices aside, the cake really is wonderful and I wish I had some right now! My husband actually looked up the recipe online, but I watched it being made recently on a Disney program and I think I'd rather pay for it when I'm there. ;)

I had a reservation for Brown Derby for an upcoming trip just to get the grapefruit cake and cobb salad. After reading this I'm going to cancel and just SR. Thanks for the posts!

It is just GROSS!! Had it in April, and it is not sweet at all. Never again!! It tasted like a grapefruit without the sugar sprinkled on it.
