Grapefruit Cake from Brown Derby: Comments

Has anyone had the Grapefruit cake from Brown Derby? If so, How did you like it?

Love it, light slightly fruity cake with a nice fluffy cream cheese frosting arnised with candied grapefuit. One of my favorites!

The cake is great. All the adults at the table loved it. All the kids at the table didn't.

Well, I'll have to chime in and say that I didn't like it. I ordered it because I had heard that it was the "signature" dessert at Brown Derby. I should have taken into account that I don't like grapefruit! And, yes, it did have a distinct grapefruit taste to it (well, that shouldn't have been a big surprise). So, if you like grapefruit, you'd probably enjoy it. If you don't, don't order it!

A co-worker of mine just returned and raved about the grapefruit cake at the Brown Derby. She was so excited when I brought the recipe into work for her a few days later.

I thought it was okay...not great but certainly not horrible.

Now my DH had the Cheesecake (Praline/Macadamia Nut/White Chocolate something-another) and it was TOO DIE FOR.

I used the recipe a couple of years ago when it had been printed in The Disney Magazine...it tastes nothing like the real thing.

Ditto! I didn't like it either. I didn't order it, just had a bite of my mom's (who liked it, but she has has only about 25% of a normal person's taste/smell senses and therefore could actually taste what she was eating for once, since it was strong. But I digress....). I like oranges, but not a big fan of grapefruit. It seemed kind of dry to me too.

On the other hand, the double vanilla bean creme brulee was to die for

I totally enjoyed it last trip! It was light...moist...and the frosting was fabulous. I wasn't sure what to expect but I really enjoyed it...

I love grapefruits and thought this cake would be great for me...but in the end I really didn't care for it either. It was more on the tart side than sweet (although mine wasn't dry) and maybe even a bit bitter tasting. I thought that the cream cheese icing would balance out the tartness, but it was just as tart as the cake. Different strokes for different folks I guess!

FYI...if you ask for a copy of the menus (which I always do), then they will give you the recipe as well. It's on a little hat card.

I have noticed that you have gone to DW every year since 97. Have you considered DVC as an option? It may work out as a major cost savings for you and the accomodations are fantastic.

The first time I had the grapefruit cake, I was not a fan. I went back six months later and had it again and loved it. It's now one of my 'must haves' on a trip to DW.

I used to like it a lot in the early days of the Brown Derby. But last couple of trips when I ordered it, found it to be rather dry and a little less "grapefruit" than before.

We have had the cake many times and always enjoyed it. It does not have much of a Grapefruit taste though.
