I was watching Food Network last night and they had a show on amusement park food... one of the segments featured WDW and they mentioned this yummy looking cake.

Is it as good as they made it sound?

And... can you go just for dessert? Would you still need a reservation?

The grapefruit cake is just gross. Had too much of the bitter grapefruit taste, not enough sweetness for a dessert.

While I have never done it myself, I have heard that sometimes the Starring Rolls bakery has the Grapefruit Cake in their case AND if they don't have it, you can ask them to go get a piece for you.

DH and I are really looking forward to trying this out on our next trip to WDW, as it sounds delicious and we don't want to book a full meal at Brown Derby since we will have an 18 month old with us...

I am not a fan of the Grapefruit cake. DH loves it. He had it last week but was upset because the candied grapefruit they usually have on it was not there.

In terms of HBD it is always very packed. Almost impossible to just walk in without an ADR. Maybe you could sit at the bar and order it?Or as cheshirgirl mentioned try the bakery as well.

Wonderful... not too sweet but sweet enough to make a great ending to an amazing meal. HBD was one of the best dining experiences we had on our last trip, much MUCH better the Le Cellier. The waitress even brought us out the recipe for the cake.

I had it last Thursday night at the Brown Derby, and it was wonderful!!!

I love the grapefruit cake! I was skeptical last month when my fiance ordered it, but I tasted it and loved it!

Would you be able to share the recipe?

Hmmm... I'll bet I'd be able to sit at the bar and have dessert. That's a great idea, thanks!!

We were there Fri. June 6th, the first day of SWW. I called wdw-dine that morning and had a choice of times to eat for lunch...and that was for a party of 8! I wonder with the 2 signature credits if HBD isn't as busy as in the past, or perhaps it's just that Star Wars people don't do table service. Anyway, call and give it a try, you never know! FWIW, we did have the candied grapefruit on the cake that day. I like the cake a lot! The chocolate cake that someone else in our group ordered was delicious too!

My DH, who is a BIG dessert eater, absolutely hated it. Said it was the worse thing he had ever tasted in a dessert. I did not try it. If it isn't chocolate--I don't eat it. :rotfl2:

I absolutley LOVE  the grapefruit cake! DD (21), on the other hand can't stand it and doesn't know how on earth I can eat the stuff :rotfl2:

So, I guess it just depends on the person... but, hey, you won't know until you try it! :thumbsup2

I'd love to... IF I can find it lol. Let me look tomorrow and see if I can. My den looks horrid atm because I am doing a major sorting and I don't have any idea where anything is.

I was the only one in my family that was not impressed with THE BROWN DERBY. However, I LOVED the grapefruit cake. ::yes:: I am going back to WDW this December and this wonderful cake is on my list to get.

The grapefruit cake at Browbn Derby used to be pretty good. But then again, prior to Fantasmic, the Brown Derby used to be pretty good too.
Last time we were there, the grapefruit cake was dry, relatively tastelsss, and a smaller portion than before.

We are going down this June specifically for SWW and are doing TS every day that we are there.

I ran a poll re: the grapefruit cake and it got very mixed reviews. DW is a HUGE grapefruit fan and absolutely DID NOT like this cake. I wasn't a fan eitehr, but I didn't expect to be. We have never had a problem getting in to HBD - we usually call the morning of and get ADRs or just walk in when the place first opens. To each their own so I hope you enjoy it, but I know one grapefruit fan who did not.

This is the recipe they hand out at BD. I've never actually made it... another one of those things on my to-do list

Disney MGM Studios
Grapefruit Cake

Ingredients:
1 ½ cups sifted cake flour
¾ cup sugar
1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
¼ cup water
¼ cup vegetable oil
3 eggs (separated)
3 tablespoons grapefruit juice
½ teaspoon grated lemon rind
¼ teaspoon cream of tartar

Method of Preparation: Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt into mixing bowl. Make a well in center of dry ingredients. Add water, oil, egg yolks, grapefruit juice, and lemon rind. Beat until smooth. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar separately, until whites are stiff but not dry. Gradually pour egg yolk mixture over whites, folding gently with a rubber spatula until just blended. Do not stir the mixture. Pour into an ungreased pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes, or until cake springs back when lightly touched with a finger. Invert pan on cake rack until cool. Run spatula around edge of cake. Carefully remove from pan. With a serrated knife, gently cut layer in half. Yield: 4-6 portions

Grapefruit Cream Cheese Frosting

Ingredients:
2 six-ounce packages of Cream Cheese
2 teaspoons Lemon Juice
1 teaspoon Grated Lemon Rind
¾ cup Powdered Sugar (sifted)
6-8 drops Yellow Food Coloring
1 one-pound can Grapefruits Sections (well drained)

Method of Preparation: Let cream cheese soften at room temperature. Beat cheese until fluffy. Add lemon juice and rind. Gradually blend in sugar. Beat until well blended. Add food coloring. Crush several grapefruit sections to measure 2 teaspoons. Blend into frosting. Spread frosting on bottom half of cake. Top with several grapefruit sections. Cover with second layer of cake. Frost top and sides. Garnish with remaining grapefruit sections.
