I posted a pre trip report - seems like ages ago - and here's the next part.

I can't do a day by day report because after about 5 days my note taking declined and all seems to merge, but I will do my best.

We flew from Leeds Bradford to Amsterdam, this was good because we got rid of all of our hold luggage at the smaller airport where the queues were shorter and because they also booked us onto our next flight from Amsterdam to MCO we mamaged to get seats all together.

Flight from Leeds to Amstedam was quick and uneventful.

At Amsterdam - with Martinair -everything was going well and we were boarded on time and then the pilot said that they were going to hold us on the plane 'cos they had a warning light that wasn't working - one and a half gours later they let us off - gave us meal vouchers and told us that they were gong to prepare another plane.

The meal vouchers were more than adequate and we managed to have a reasonable meal......we were determined not to be bothered, there's no point you can't DO anything anyway.

Eventually re-boarded and arrived in Orlando 5 hours late.

GD6 loved the shuttle.

Immigration - hubby and I took one line and son and his wife and 2 girls took another .... we were through pretty quick..and stood waiting for the others when they called over that they'd be 5 minutes and went off with someone in an immigration officers uniform.

We collected our luggage - and theirs - and 40 MINUTES later they joined us, they had no idea what the problem was.

they said that the official was doing the usual thing and chatting asking questions like

Is this your first trip to the US?

Arre you on vacation?

How long are you staying? etc...etc...

and then he asked what their occupations were, they told him that they were both police officers - and then he just went quiet.......another official arrived and asked son to accompany him and told daugh in law that she could carry on through with the children, she said 'no way' and went with him - they were sat in a small ofice for about 35 minutes and then someone came in and sai d 'thankyou - you can go now'

'Is there a problem?' asked my son 'No - no problem' they replied and he, after the delay and knowing we were waiting decided not to question it any further. How strange is that?

We eventually collected our luggage and went to get the car - it was a Dodge Grand Caravan, son was pleased, it was spacious enough for us all and our luggage - also had a built in baby seat, but we brought ours so we didn't use it. Daugh in law said later in the holiday that she was glad she'd brought her own as she felt it had more support....but would have settled for the built in one if she hadnt't....youngest GD is 2...we also brought the booster for the eldest grand daughter who is 6. Flying out we used that for the 2 yr old but it took uo too much space in the seat so we sent it in the hold coming home - more room for her to stretch out and sleep

Made our way to the villa at Windsor Hills --the owner had sent us very good instructions and we were there in about half an hour, maybe less - we were very tired and just went straight to bed.

What a long day ~ Hope it gets better.

That was strange with the immigration officers. It must have been a long day, looking forward to the next one. :)

I bet the immigration officials just picked them at random then panicked when they found out their profession!

Great start, shame about the hold up but what a lovely positive attitude you all had, I would have been tearing my hair out ;)

Hopefully the start didn't dampen your spirits. Looking forward to the rest :)

Sounds to me like you had the right attitude when faced with delays. Hopefully, you managed to enjoy your holiday once it finally got underway :)

Lets hope this was the only incident in an otherwise brilliant holiday,
claire xx

that's very interesting about immigration...
any number of things at work there...
either terror related or immigration related...
the US is very sticky about letting people into the country who look like they might actually have plans to stay rather than just spend a holiday and leave..

i assume that you didn't have to get visas in advance (as is required for most visitors to the US)..
when someone is required to get an advance visa, these suspicions can be handled in advance...
if you arrive in the US without having had to go through the preliminary visa review and they think you might be staying, they'll investigate..

it could have been that.....suspicion that your son had immigration intentions..
or perhaps they'd had some sort of terrorist directive regarding police officers from the UK....they get lots of warnings all the time about suspicious Brits - so maybe there was a suspiciious Brit on the list who was a police officer - so they pulled your son aside while they checked....

kind of ironic really, since the person i would have thought they would have the least problem with is a police officer...

we think that they decided to pull him for whatever reason before they knew he was a police officer because the escorts appeared then as he was answering - his wife also is a police officer. Now that we are back he is going to make some enquiries - out of curiosity mare than anything else - but we reckon it was his passport - someone with a similar name etc..... They obviously checked somewhere .....and then allowed him in.......

I hope that was the only incident of your holiday ~ I'm off to read somemore :)

What a relief - you are all there!

Onwards
