We are going to WDW in January, and I have made shirts for everyone except my dad. "Grandpa" won't wear anything other than love sleeve button down dress shirts and slacks. He will wear this type of outfit anywhere, so making him a shirt would be pointless. I don't want him to be left out at all though, and I would love to make something that says "Grandpa". Does anyone have any creative ideas? I was thinking a pin he could wear, but I don't know how to do that. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

How about adding something to a pocket of one of his l/s button down shirts? That way you could keep it tied in with the rest of you! In fact, the shirts I made for our whole family, I made them on white t-shirts but instead of a big transfer on the front, I did a "pocket" embellishment, with a large design on back. I know he wouldn't want the big design on back, but I'll bet you could do a nice pocket print!

I made pins before our last trip and they were easy. I picked up the pins at Michael's. I got the bigger ones and they were a little bigger than the ones you get in the park. I think they were about $2.00 a piece but you can easily open them and change the design. So if you just printed out several designs, he could change it daily and you would only have to buy one pin.

I have made pins and stickers. I shrink down a big image. For the pin I use the shrink printer paper and put it in the oven. For the stickers I use sticker paper.

Would you believe that my father-in-law is exactly like your dad???

My DFIL will not wear any t-shirts...he doesn't even own any. He only wears polos. Well, when DH, the kids, & I went to WDW this past May with both my parents & DH's parents, I had matching t-shirts for all of us. DFIL would not wear them, but for the special group pictures (like at Chef Mickey's, 'Ohana, etc.) he brought along the designated shirt for that day (we had matching shirts just about every day) & layed it across his Polo shirt for the picture!! This was his own idea!! In the pictures, it really looks like he's wearing the shirt with the rest of us!!

For DH's birthday dinner he wanted low key - so I booked California Grill - then I surprised him with a "birthday shirt" I got a fabulous design from one of the talented people here and put it like a logo on his polo shirt. He loved it!

I say grab some older shirts or try some golf shirts on him & include him. He would probably go for it if you go to the effort of making it to suit his preferences.

good luck!

January can be a cold month to go to Disney. Would he consider wearing it underneath as an undershirt? If you have any photo opportunities he could take the regular shirt off or at least open up the front of the shirt to display the tee shirt. Also, he may warm up to the idea as he sees others doing it especially if there are others at his age doing it.

I think I will make him a shirt and a pin. I haven't been able to play around a ton with the pin yet. I tried making the image small using the printer, but you can't see the images that well. Maybe I will try the shrink paper if I can find it.

I didn't think there was anyone else like my dad out there- funny. Does your DFIL wear only dress slacks as well? My dad is a retired doctor, and he will only wear long sleeve button down dress shirts with dress slacks. One time in my life I saw him in a bathing suit. My mom says she has seen him in jeans once in college. :cool2: :)
