My mom will be joining us for our first real trip to WDW (we had a doomed, one-day MK visit prior). We will be at the parks toward the end of January, staying at Fort Wilderness. What would you suggest for something special she could do with just my DD (age 5)? DD can be very shy, so we are going to try a princess character meal all together in case she isn't all about it. She loves princesses, Mickey etc, but could not care less about Pooh.

I don't think BBB will be a good fit for her. I considered the tea party with Aurora, but for the cost, wow, we could really do many other things, about which my mom agrees.

And thank you to everyone on these boards. You have taught me so much!

How about a dinner with just the two of them at a place they might both like? Will your husband/significant other be with you? If so, that's a bonus night alone for you as well.

My mom has gone with us twice and those times she took our boys, grabbed a pizza from the food court at the resort and then went and watch the movie that was on the lawn. Simple but memorable as both boys remember it still

What about just the Afternoon Tea @ the Grand Floridian and then maybe catch the Princess Parade that is there as well?

Since you are staying at Fort Wilderness and can take the boat over to Magic Kingdom how about your mom and your daughter getting fast passes to see some the princesses? The princesses are very good about greeting children that are unsure about the experience. Also, lunch or breakfast at Be Our Guest might be nice. We take our now seven year old granddaughter to the parks every year and it is always a wonderful experience. Great memories!

There are many inexpensive things they could do. At Ft.W, your DD could do a pony ride and they could have lunch at Trails End. They could do Wilderness Explorers together at AK or the pirate adventure or Sorcerers at MK. They could do a horse carriage ride. As PP suggested, afternoon tea at GF is nice. If they want to do an event, perhaps the dessert party in MK or Tiana"s ice cream social.

she might also enjoy the Chip and Dale campfire at the Fort...buy the s'mores packet for the marshmallows, and they can have a fun character experience while also eating dessert. That would have been a win-win for me and my grandmother at that age!

Enjoy your trip!!

There is a free Cinderella promenade in the GF lobby daily (I think) around 3:30. Kids are invited to dance after Cinderella and Prince descend the stairs or they can watch. You could follow with early dinner at 1900 Park Fare if she would enjoy dinner with the stepmom and stepsisters. Follow with a monorail ride to Poly for ice cream.

My kids loved going to visit the horses at Fort Wilderness. You can usually see the little white Cinderella ponies in the outside corrals and then go into the barn to visit the larger work horses. They are quite impressive! Pony rides are available in the corral for a small fee.

I should note - these horses are next to Trails End restaurant, not the trail ride stables which are up front by the Outpost/check in area.
