GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

50 people?! What was it before?

I know we have a 100 for protests and church but I still think we’re below 10 for anything else.
We're supposed to hit groups of 50 being allowed starting Monday (next week). We're currently at groups of 10 or less.

There are plenty of states that are. But that is exactly my point - when all 24 (or 31) get lumped together in articles, it becomes convoluted. So take my state for example - it’s always included in those articles about spikes. But it’s R0 factor is 1.04 and has been for the last two weeks (and 1.03 for the two weeks prior to that). (And CA would look much better when backing out LA County.) That is much different than FL who’s currently at 1.37. So when we lump them all together, the real data gets lost. We need to pay attention to spikes and I agree there are states having them. Just not all of the ones with rising cases.

Just one final thought on this.

The citizens of our states and cities are very mobile.

My daughter and I were just discussing this today. She has a 15 minute commute to her job in Florida and that stresses her out. She works 10 hour days and when we were looking for a place for her to live, we both knew she wouldn't handle a lengthy commute well. She told me today that one of her co-workers lives in another city and has an 1 1/2 hour commute each way! Yesterday he had a flat tire getting on the ramp and did not get home until after 11pm after working 10 hours yesterday in the Florida heat (in a mask, BTW).

My point of that story was just to add a little humanity to this thread, but also to point out, that we are so mobile in this society today. We really shouldn't focus on small locations talking about this virus. It's all relevant. If I stop in Ocala or Homosassa to get dinner while I'm in Florida, I might encounter someone who's been in Tampa at a bar, spent the weekend in Miami or just drove in from Georgia.

Maybe I have a slightly different way of looking at this because my city is the largest in the state. A lot of people living in the adjoining state travel to my city for work, nightlife and tourist attractions. Therefore, I'm concerned about my state's statistics and theirs.

As long as the information is true, I can deal with it, any way they want to present it.

This is from one of the leaders of an area hospital

Benoit added that “the number of cases we’ve seen increasing certainly is real. It’s not just increased testing. It certainly increased hospitalization of COVID patients as well,” he said.

Claustrophobia and anxiety are two very small possibilities. Generally speaking, Americans don't want to be told what to do (even if the outcome is possible serious illness or death) and they can't stand being uncomfortable or inconvenienced for any amount of time.
On one of my trips to my local grocery store, I encountered a woman outside of the store wearing her mask and gloves. She was crying. I asked her if she needed help. She said she was too afraid of the virus to enter the store. She then went back to her car and left. For some people, anxiety and claustrophobia are debilitating.

It's obvious that you have a very low opinion of your fellow Americans. I'm sorry for you.

I sure do, and it has been solidified by words and actions the last few months. If that type of behavior is acceptable to you, then I'm sorry for you.

That one woman's experience is valid and true - and I'm proud of her for making it as far as the grocery store entrance.

But we can not say that because of that ONE WOMAN it excuses the behavior of thousands of others. Our leaders aren't even wearings masks and promoting the positive effects of it. So yeah, I'm disappointed with my fellow Americans and you should too.

It’s all about the economy at this point.
Yup. The US will be in debt for many more years because of all the Corona virus bailouts. Americans have been laid off and lost their health insurance. The measures to stop the virus spread have resulted in the spread of poverty.

I don't think printing more money is going to help.

They could have given those corporate bail outs to the citizens of their country so that way we don't end up with mass poverty... but what do I know :rolleyes1

The US has never really been a nanny state. The safety nets have been disappearing since I was a kid. You have to go to the EU if you want proper safety nets. Denmark might me a good choice.

They are reopening the economy. What more do you want? My only concern is most States have been strict enough about reopening.

I don't think providing people with some assistance during a global pandemic equates to folks longing for a permanent nanny state.

But where is the money coming from? In the end someone is gonna pay, most likely tax payers and it will hit the middle class the hardest in the coming years.

So we should have a nanny state since we have learned people are incapable of saving for a rainy day. It’s pouring right now.

Since this seems to be the active Covid thread, I’ll ask here, even if it’s a little off topic.

I was just reading this. If there isn’t a belief we can get herd immunity because immunity doesn’t last long enough, how will a vaccine be different? I’m not being snarky, I truly don’t understand the science. Is there a way a vaccine could give longer immunity, where it ould be an annual vaccine like the flu shot?

(also understanding this guy is talking about coronviruses in general, not specific to Covid).

NOT AT ALL on expert on this

But I think the thought process is similar to the idea behind the flu vaccine

In both cases (getting it "naturally" or from a vaccine) once you have some sort of antibodies to it, your next round is often less severe. I think I remember from last year them saying if you got the flu and after the flu shot your symptoms and recovery time seemed to be less???

Interested to hear others take on this idea

You would need a booster if the immunity from a vaccine isn't lasting

I'm not sure if I believe that paying for it is an issue. We've been hearing about concerns over paying for debt since the early 80's yet we spend more and money.
