Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island?

I am glad I had the opportunity to stay there once, but I would never spend the money to go back. I attended a nursing convention there a few years ago and was very excited to be able to find an excuse to stay there. Mackinac Island is a wonderful place to visit and I am never disappointed in it, but the lodgings leave much to be desired, imho. I have also stayed at Mission Point and was disappointed in the accomodations there, as well. I feel that because Mackinac Island is a destination in itself, the accomadations are subpar.

You will know what I mean after you stay there. The beds are not comfortable, the tv's are tiny little 13" (think portable size), and there is no air conditioning. They do provide you with little box fans (thank god we stayed in October). The service was good, and I don't mind dressing up at all. Now, the food is out of this world! The next time I visit Mackinac Island I will have to go just to eat! Definitely bring your own bikes (the rentals are not great) and bike the island.

A better hotel choice in northern Michigan in the same spirit as the Grand (but without all the history and with far more luxurious ammenities) is the Inn at Bay Harbor. I cannot say enough good things about it. If we didn't already own an HGVC timeshare, I would have definitely considered a Boyne timeshare. Next time we decide to go to Mackinac Island we will stay there and just go to the island for a day. I guess I am a little spoiled! princess:

DH and I spent a night at the Grand Hotel for our 6th wedding anniversary back in 1981. We paid $160 for the room which back then included all three meals. Now you only get dinner and breakfast, if you want to partake of the lunch buffet you have to pay extra.

We just had a small room on the back side of the hotel, and it was decorated very strangely in stripes, florals and plaids but it did look nice. We didn't spend much time in the room though.

Dinner was wonderful, with a large orchestra playing. We loved it.

We've been back to the island several times, last time staying at The Pines B&B and the bed was so uncomfortable that we were up at 5 a.m. riding bikes around the island. So strange seeing main street empty of people, except for a street washer!

Would LOVE to stay at the Grand again but it is a little too expensive we feel. Maybe someday for one of their "specialty" weekends where it's a package deal.
