I am glad I had the opportunity to stay there once, but I would never spend the money to go back. I attended a nursing convention there a few years ago and was very excited to be able to find an excuse to stay there. Mackinac Island is a wonderful place to visit and I am never disappointed in it, but the lodgings leave much to be desired, imho. I have also stayed at Mission Point and was disappointed in the accomodations there, as well. I feel that because Mackinac Island is a destination in itself, the accomadations are subpar.
You will know what I mean after you stay there. The beds are not comfortable, the tv's are tiny little 13" (think portable size), and there is no air conditioning. They do provide you with little box fans (thank god we stayed in October). The service was good, and I don't mind dressing up at all. Now, the food is out of this world! The next time I visit Mackinac Island I will have to go just to eat! Definitely bring your own bikes (the rentals are not great) and bike the island.
A better hotel choice in northern Michigan in the same spirit as the Grand (but without all the history and with far more luxurious ammenities) is the Inn at Bay Harbor. I cannot say enough good things about it. If we didn't already own an HGVC timeshare, I would have definitely considered a Boyne timeshare. Next time we decide to go to Mackinac Island we will stay there and just go to the island for a day. I guess I am a little spoiled!
