We have reservations for three nights in August at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island (Michigan). Anyone ever stay there?

My only complaint is that jackets and ties are required for dinner. I hate having to wear a jacket and tie on my vacation.

I never stayed there, but we did tour the place and eat the Buffet. What a spread!!!!! Well worth it.

It is very old like alot of the hotels. A couple are new, but I haven't been back for 5 years or so.

We stayed on the "strip" at the Murray Hotel, a bed & breakfast.

If you can bring your own bikes, I would do so.

Isn't the meal included with your stay? If not, there are a lot of little out of the way resturants, where you don't have to wear a jacket and tie. I think it is just the spirit of the place that doesn't want to change tradition. I don't think there is air conditioning either. We were there Labor Day weekend and the day was very warm-but the nite breezes were pleasant.

Nope...you have to wear the jacket in the hotel after a certain time, I do believe.

Breakfast and dinner are included in our rate. We will definitely be eating at the Grand Hotel since it is paid for.

You'll love it! :thumbsup2

I was married on the Island, at Stonecliffe Resort. It's one of our favorite vacation spots. :goodvibes

You must wear a jacket and tie in the restaurants and lobby areas after 6 pm. I wonder how I will look in my navy blue suit and flip flops?

Pretty interesting I would think.:lmao: The place is overpriced just like all the other hotels there. But I love Mac Island.
We live in Texas now, which is a long dang way away from Michigan. I was born in Detriot.

The price was not an issue for us. We had a bunch of DVC points that we would lose on August 30 so we used them for the Grand Hotel.

We were at Mackinac Island last summer also, and spent 2 nights in a suite at the Lilac Tree on the main strip. I really liked that place.

How nice for you...I do love Mackinac Island. Funny story...before cell phones.

My dd got "lost" and she knew we were going to the Grand Hotel for the buffet. She did make it there and we finally got a message via our hotel. (We felt so embarrassed).

The folks at the Grand were very nice to her and kept an eye out while we headed over there.

Of course now we have cell phones, but prior to that is is easy to get seperated on your bikes.

Have FUN!!!

Does anyone know if they allow dogs in the main dining room? We can't leave Brutus out of the fun :rotfl:

We are heading to Mackinac Island on 7/22. We've had many overnight stays on the Island, none at the Grand. This trip, we are staying at the Murray, followed by 2 nights at a B&B just south of Indian River.

May I ask what was your rate? I have been in love with that hotel ever since seeing Somewhere in Time, but have never even been to the island.

We will be on Mackinac Island next Monday but just for the day of bike riding and buying tons of fudge!! :teeth: We stay at a hotel over in Mackinaw City. Actually we've stayed at the same hotel 8 times!! Love it!! We have a beautiful view of the island!

I wish I were going with you! I've wanted to stay there since the first time I saw "Somewhere In Time".

DH says we'll have to wait until the kids are tired of going to WDW. Then we can use our DVC points to stay there instead. Maybe someday . . .

We are using DVC points, so I am unsure of the rate. I know that it is real expensive. Take a look at the official site.

Little Tid Bit of info. The carriage makers on Mackinaw Island make all the carriages for WDW.

Me and my husband took our bikes over last year, we didn't stay on the perimeter like they ask you to. Now we know why-we had to change clothes and take a shower-you get pretty splattered riding bikes following horses :rotfl:

we stayed there when I was 14 I hated it then, my parents either didnt know we couldnt wear shorts or knew and didnt care but as we were walking back to the hotel IN SHORTS we got stopped even before we made it to the front of the hotel and were told we were to go no where near the front of the hotel and to go to some secret path for the improperly dressed.

Its beautiful and Mackinaw Island is AWESOME but I think the Grand was just a little too stuffy for me.

Oh my gosh, I am sooo jealous! You are going to love the Grand Hotel. I went every summer growing up. Yes, they are very strict about the dress code. But eating all dressed up in the big dining room always made me feel like royalty, I loved it. They have a huge pool, and you have to try the fudge. I agree, bring your own bikes if you can. Enjoy sitting out on the big porch and dancing in the ballroom. Man, I wish I was going this summer!

My dad stayed there a few years ago. He was sitting on the porch when a staff member very politely pointed to his watch and said, "Excuse me sir, it is almost time to dress for dinner". He thought the reminder was done in good taste. I guess they are used to it.
