What is a typical gift for someone graduating from High School? I haven't had to do this in forever so I am clueless. My niece will be graduating and I have no idea what is appropriate to give.

For regular gifts - ie... neighbors, etc. I usually give $25.00. For a niece or nephew, depending on how close you are to them - $50.00 - $100.00.

Is this in line with everyone else's train of thought?

My nieces and nephews get $20 for HS graduation from us. There are 11 of them, so giving $100 each is not an option!

We don't do anything for neighborhood kids, unless we are invited to their reception. Then I think $10-$20 would be max.

Eek! That would not be an option for me, either! 11! I have one nephew, DH has two nieces and that's it. And again, how close are you to the person? If not that close - $20.00 - 25.00 is more than plenty.

our nephews graduated high school 2 and 3 years ago respectively..we took our digital camera over to the high school..took a few pictures of the building till we found the one we liked..then came home and used a photo program to make it into sepia/brown tones..then we imprinted the poem Desiderata on top of the picture..with their graduation date ..and put a $50 bill inside the card which we wrapped up with the frame..both boys loved it..and they have a treasured momento of both their school..and their graduation day!

LOL Pam!

I agree it depends on the relationship you have with the grad. We live in another state from all of them, so we are not nearly as close as if we lived on the same block.

At one time DH and each coached varsity basketball in two different programs.... I think that is when we started setting some serious limits on gifts. When each of us had 5-6 seniors on the team each year, plus our own family grads.... that time of the year became very expensive!

For my niece I gave her a Lands End Attache case. It was about $40, and I think it is on sale now. I was considering getting it and putting it away for my daughter. She will hopefully graduate in 2004.

They are very nice, but again, I agree, it depends on how close you are to the person.

Thank you all. I was thinking along the lines of $100 myself and just wanted to see what everyone else thought. I may be extremely far in miles from my niece, but she is important to me. (If all goes well with world events she will be in Italy for Easter).

lynxstch, I love your idea as her HS is where I graduated from (she even had my old books in some of her classes and I graduated 18 years ago), but since I live in another country it is impossible for me to do. But....upon thinking further about this, perhaps I can have my sister take the picture and email it to me.....hummmm.

lisajl, I like this idea as well. I will have to go do a search.
