Hi,

I'm interested in getting a GPS watch but wondering if it's necessary (or might be preferred) to get a model that has a backlight?

Without the backlighting will I be able to see it during the night run?

Also, without a gps watch during the race, how do you know your pace?

Thanks.

I would get one that is backlit. Otherwise you will need to look at it just right when running under a street light. It is much more convenient to have one backlit. Most good ones are backlit.

A lot of them also have an option to leave the light on for the whole run, rather than just for a few seconds when you push a button. Much more convenient to just glance down w/o having to fumble for a smallish button each time you want to look at the screen.

My son did the WDW 1/2 Marathon this past Jan and is relatively fast. He did it in 77 minutes, was 38th overall, and was right up front at the start. He is in the Disney video of the start and in it you can see him and a lot of the other fast guys with their watches all glowing. A lot of them had the backlight set so it would just stay on. In fact, at the video at the castle in MK, when my son was going through the couple of runners before and after him all had their watches glowing.

My wife, who like me, is NOT fast, runs early in the morning when it's dark most of the year at that time. She leaves her light on as an additional little extra light so it helps her be seen. Every little bit helps.
