gov't credit/rebate for a HE furnace question

We need a new furnace, so we figured we'll take advantage of the federal tax break. My HVAC guy spoke to my mother (who is long-time client and called him for a quote on my behalf) and he mumbled something on her voice mail about a requirement to not only replace the furnace but something about the a/c as well.

Is this true? I don't remember any such requirement, or a mention of it on the gov't web site. Any help is appreciated.

p.s. the HVAC guy is a trustworthy person who has given us great prices and reliable service in the past, so I don't have a reason to mistrust him. just thinking he is misinformed.

Youd have to google but yes theres somthing out there kinda like the home buyer credit thing that if you replace your appliances with he appliances, the govt will give you a certain amount .....

We just replaced our unit this fall. The heat pump (outside unit) was way past its prime - furnace worked fine. However, we were required to replace both the outside unit and the furnace due to "gov't regulations". It made sense in our situation as both were 25 years old. There is no way the furnace would match efficiency to the new outside unit. Our HVAC guy said they are legally obligated to replace both and have to provide documentation that it was done. After install they provide a certificate that you file with your taxes making you eligible for the tax credit. (I had to remind them I needed it - so be sure to follow-up).

You do not have to replace both. We have many customers who only needed a furnace and in our area the cost of the ac unit required for the tax credit does not make sense. A heat pump is different than an ac unit and both might have to be replaced for maximum savings and compatibility.
