Government Shutdown and Disney Fund

Hey everybody! I am also worried about how long the shutdown will last and if it will change our plans.

I am an Air Traffic Controller for the FAA and still going to work but being told we won't get paid until the shutdown is over. They have also cancelled all vacation leave and we are being told there is no sick leave approved either. So if you take sick time for any reason or take vacation time you won't get paid for it. We have a fairly stressful job and this only makes it worse.

Our disney trip is the first week of December so I have a little bit of wiggle room. I am thinking of calling disney to see if they will give us an extension on when our final pavement is due.

Good Luck everybody

I feel you! We are in the same boat. Just to see I called Disney last week and they will give you an extra 15 days, but it has to be paid off at 30 days or they will cancel it. Also, after 45 days there will be a $200 cancelation fee. I went ahead and paid mine off, but you can call and they will make a note of it.

Or if you really have too Disney will push back you trip. Really hope they don't drag this on to the end, but its starting to look like bad divorce.

I broke down and watched some of the news today and I'm hoping that this will be resolved soon.

We are down about 2 million federal employees from the average of the 60's and 70's. Has government "service" suffered that much? Currently (2011 latest numbers I found), we are up about 200,000 - 300,000 federal employees since 2007. Are "services" that much better since then?

You do understand we are "up" in numbers with Federal employees due to the cutback in contractors, right? It's been a seesaw for years. First, it was that hiring contractors would save money, then it was, no, Fed employees would save money. That is the main reason that Fed employee numbers have increased, not that there are more people overall doing the same job, just not as many contractors as a few years ago. I have seen it go up and down over the last 20 years. You have to look at all sides, not just the one that shows more Fed employees. A lot of the jobs currently getting done under the "shutdown/slimdown" are being done by contractors who also will soon run out of money. The contracts are usually only paid for a month at a time, even if they are "fully funded". Contractors do not work if there is no money to bill against.

And, contractors and government both are "greening" which means we're losing tremendous amounts of knowledge, experience, etc. I've seen how it impacts where we work, plus, in general, the younger, greener, cheaper employees have a very different work ethic overall than older ones do. It does impact big time.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for slimming down Gov. I think it's too big, but the way to fix it is not to just randomly chop. This shutdown/slimdown isn't really showing the true impact. It's very selective. Does everyone know that the during last shutdown that monuments weren't blocked off? The goal this time is to inflict pain to gain political points. It's not working.

You are sooooo right!

My group has increased in size, not only by Fed employees, but by contractors. The work is there. People are doing it. The bodies are needed. The decision was, in our location, to increase the number of contractors. I am a Contacting Officer Representative. I review invoices for my contract. We are paying far more for contract employees than if they were Feds, but "Management" decided it was politically correct to not have more Feds. That's how we waste money.

As to the brain drain, it is so true. The older, experienced folks leave with their knowledge, and to make it worse, to keep the numbers down, they don't hire replacements. There is no new blood coming in. Things have to be relearned, mistakes are made, time is wasted. Again, not the wisest choice. No thought for the future is given.

It is a shame to see what is happening to our office, the way it is being harmed by everything that is going on. It's a big shame not to be appreciated.

Again... I'll get off my soapbox :mic:
