Can this be used like the teacher/nurse rate or does it have to be used on business? I called an 800 number and they said the gov't rate of $144 was only for gov't employees there on business. Is this correct??? We were hoping to book using that price since dh is a local gov't employee (has his ID and paystub etc) what else would they need for us to get that rate, anyone know????? Thanks

Technically, yes... practically, no. If your husband flashes his government employee photo ID, I'd be shocked if they'd ask for his "travel papers".

Thanks for the info. I think I'll have to find some other discount. It makes me nervous to think I could get there and encounter a problem and have to pay the full rate. I wonder what "travel papers" would include and how dh could get them from work LOL

I called the Swan July 24 AM, and inquired about the govt rate. I told them I was planning my honeymoon ( obviously NOT official govt business ), and I was still given the $ 144 rate over the phone. Alas, there were no discounted rooms remaining for my travel dates. GOOD LUCK !!

I stayed there too under government rate - I just showed them my government id card.

Would they even know what 'travel orders' look like? I'm sure your dh has an idea, and you can do amazing things with word and powerpoint these days. :teeth:
in my experience, a hotel has never asked for those. just an ID.

I mentiond the "travel papers" because someone recently called Starwood and was told that the person recieving the discount would be required to show the clerk ID and paperwork from their management that stated that they were traveling on business. But I agree, I doubt that anyone has actually been asked for such proof, and I doubt the desk clerks even care. An ID is all that anyone here's been asked for.

We were going to book the Swan using govt discount for this summer. My dh is an elected official in town, collects a very small paycheck twice a year and doesn't have any ID. So I called the Swan directly to see what they would need. They told me to bring the most recent paystub and a letter on town stationery stating he is an employee. Both of which we got and then changed resorts. I wouldn't think you would have a problem if you have all the right documentation.

I said our stay was for our 1 yr anniversary. The dolphin employee said, congrats just bring your id or your most recent paystub. I then proceeded to ask about WDW tickets, he said I'd have to talk to their disney desk. Obviously I wasn't going to be there on official gov't business. He could have cared less. He even said to have fun in disney world.

That's not a dead give away. Lots of people come to WDW on business and bring their families along with them to take advantage of the employer-paid hotel room. A division I worked for had a sales meeting at the Dolphin one year and of the 75 or so people attending the meeting about a dozen brought the spouse and kids along.

I stayed at The Swan December 2001, and also December 2002, both visits on the gov't discount. I am a New York State employee, and certainly NOT there on business.

Both visits were SOLO, and my up-comming visit this Dec. will also be solo.

They just asked for my gov't ID. I brought with me my state employee health card, my picture ID, and my latest pay stub.
They never even asked if I was there on business.

All I have to add is that I did not even know that this rate was for business only. I never communicated I was on a business trip. They never asked me if it was a business trip. I would use the rate. I thought it was a perk for government employees.

Have you checked with United Vacations? We just got back from a 6 night stay at the Swan for $564 total which included taxes and resort fees. They also gave me a card for the kids to eat free. Two free kids meals with one paid adult meal. We had a great time, fell in love with the resort and the price.
