Both my boys come to me repeatedly to tell me that they've lost a button on their shorts. They drive me crazy. And do you think that they can find the button that popped off???? Noooooooooo

So I'm looking to get a few buttons to keep on hand so I can sew them back on when it pops off again.

Do they sell buttons in a big ole bag? Or are they sold separately? What about size? I'm not sure what size button I should get. Both my boys are in men's sizes. Sizes 34 and 36. And is this something I can just pick up at Walmart?

Any place that has a craft department would have buttons. Get some in navy, black, and beige/brown to coordinate with most pant colors. They also sell the buttons used on jeans, just use pliers to put them on. Might not fall off as easy as the sewn on kind.

If your local Walmart has a fabric section, they probably have bags of buttons. I know you can buy them at JoAnn's Fabrics and Michael's craft stores. Take one of the buttons with you to size what you need, although bags of buttons probably have assorted sizes.

How are they losing buttons all the time? I think if you sew a button on the inside of the pants as a way to anchor the functional button, they might not come off as easily. You should be able to buy a stash of buttons at any fabric or craft store.

THIS! I got a bag of buttons at Meijer in the sewing section for $3-5. ( I can't remember, but it wasn't that much). The buttons about fill a snack sized baggie, and it's a great variety - browns, grey, blacks. Some with 2 holes, some 4 holes. Different sizes and silhouettes. There are usually multiples of each button. I've been using them in pairs to make eyes on owl hats I've been crocheting :)

These are what my bag of buttons looks like:

You might want to try reinforcing the buttons on their shorts. I know manufacturers aren't putting them on as well as in years past. I bought a coat last winter and within a month all the buttons has fallen off.

OK, so call me stupid but I have never heard of putting them on with pliers. Can you explain? LOL

So-called Blue Jean Buttons are not true buttons -- they are a kind of rivet.

You actually usually don't use pliers to put them on; not properly, anyway -- you use a special little brace and a hammer. You use pliers to take them off.

Any fabric store (and most discount stores that have sewing sections, such as Walmart) will have bags of assorted off-price buttons somewhere in the store. They get them from button companies' and clothing mfrs' surplus.

If you buy so-called "carded buttons" (identical and attached to a display card so they can hang on a peg), they will cost you considerably more. Don't bother unless you need them to match for something special.

When you go to replace the button get a spool of the clear plastic thread to attach it/them. Much stronger than cotton thread..

Also you can use a dab of clear nail polish to help hold the threads on the buttons tight. Dad on the center of the button.:thumbsup2

PS I would also use this time to teach your boys how to sew a button back on..may come in handy in years to come..:laundy:

You can take the shorts to the dry cleaners and they can have the seamstress sew them back on good and sturdy.
